If I re-register my car in a new state does CarFax still list me as original owner?

Hey guys,

I have a quick question, if you buy a car brand new from a dealership in California and then let's say you move to a different state for example "Oregon" or Texas and you register the car in that state.

Would Carfax show up as 2 owners or would it still be under the original owner?

I'm currently interested in getting into another F8x but seller states it's original owner and after running the carfax, it came back to me as a 2 owner vehicle but he said it's because he registered the car in a different state.

Can someone shed some light on this please.

Thanks!

Ownership only changes when the name on the title and/or registration changes. Moving to another state only changes the name of the state, not the owner.

Owner is the physical being (person, fleet, demo, etc) not the location. 2 owners is multiple people/companies.

As can be found on multiple threads, Carfax sucks.

Anything is possible.

They have a car I had down for 2 accidents for the same accident.

They also had another car - a court ordered lemon - listed as clean.

If he was the original owner, he should be able to show you the original sales paperwork.

If the original owner leased and then bought out the lease I believe that can show up as 2 owners (technically BMWFS may be first owner). As noted above, if seller is truly original lessee / owner they should be able to show you original lease documents or bill of sale and other paperwork with their name on it. That is a far better test than CarFax.

In any event, if you go to sell it later, you will look like third owner if you don't get documentation from first owner if that matters to you.
