Ok let me get this straight. Some people have both open, some one open, and others both closed?

All come as AWD so perhaps it's the tire size/M sport brakes? I have the M Sport 20"s (regular brakes) and both are closed. What else could it be?

Based on the parts catalog, passenger side should be open if you opted for 840 - High Speed Synchronisation.
Since it has the external radiator.

However, with M Performance, there is a difference. Of course, it's still not a full M, but always has a hp increase.

We have 21” (which adds option 840 for the higher top speed), regular brakes, M-Sport, and 1 is open.

I checked out Realoem and it appears raising the top speed limiter (S840A) is what adds the external radiator on the left. The M Sports have working air intakes on each side of the black strip up front. Not sure if it's M Sport or the M Sport brakes that adds them as mine is a MSport with the Msport brakes. The 40i and 50i both have the external radiators on the left. They show to have 2 radiators in the centers with the S840A, but somewhere there has to be an inter-cooler for the turbo.

I have M Sport without the brakes so that probably adds the working intake. This is very helpful, thanks.

Garage List
Same on X3 M40i. Left side open, right side closed. There is an auxiliary radiator on the lower left side.. not on right.

There is a Alpina D version w/ quad turbos, I believe that has 2 aux radiators - right and left. I believe is open on both sides.

In the US, the only way to add the top speed increase (option 840) is by getting the larger staggered wheels. The standard MSport 20” wheels do not include option 840.

So if you have the 21” or 22” wheels you will also have the additional radiator and higher top speed.

So it sounds like the larger wheels (22/21) have one side open, one side closed. 20s have both sides closed. Does anyone actually have both sides open?

Thanks all. I think we are getting close!

That explains mine, it has a small radiator on the passenger (right side, should left and right be referenced sitting in the car?), I have the 21 inch wheels, and the higher top end speed?

I assume the extra radiator is required for additional cooling at high speeds?

Radiator openings are not speed limiter or wheel size related.
My 50i M-Sport with 20”ers has the same openings as a 50i M-Sport with 22”ers.

What about the factory hitch? Does this add any extra cooling?
