Ok let me get this straight. Some people have both open, some one open, and others both closed?
All come as AWD so perhaps it's the tire size/M sport brakes? I have the M Sport 20"s (regular brakes) and both are closed. What else could it be? |

Based on the parts catalog, passenger side should be open if you opted for 840 - High Speed Synchronisation.
Since it has the external radiator.

I checked out Realoem and it appears raising the top speed limiter (S840A) is what adds the external radiator on the left. The M Sports have working air intakes on each side of the black strip up front. Not sure if it's M Sport or the M Sport brakes that adds them as mine is a MSport with the Msport brakes. The 40i and 50i both have the external radiators on the left. They show to have 2 radiators in the centers with the S840A, but somewhere there has to be an inter-cooler for the turbo.

Same on X3 M40i. Left side open, right side closed. There is an auxiliary radiator on the lower left side.. not on right.
There is a Alpina D version w/ quad turbos, I believe that has 2 aux radiators - right and left. I believe is open on both sides. |

So if you have the 21 or 22 wheels you will also have the additional radiator and higher top speed.

I assume the extra radiator is required for additional cooling at high speeds? |

What about the factory hitch? Does this add any extra cooling?
