2024 X5 50e... iDrive is "bricked"
I just received my new X5 50e on Monday 4/24. Like it... not yet as in love as I was with my 2018 X3 M40i... but still getting to know the X5.
I was not impressed this morning when I turned on the car and found the entire right side screen blacked out and various messages on the left side saying driving assistance features weren't working. I can drive the car, brake, and accelerate, but basically anything that requires right-side UI is not working... including climate control. I tried resetting by pressing the volume button for 70 seconds. Didn't work. Any other ideas? The dealer is looking at it tomorrow, but I'm hoping to avoid a silent, climate-control-free trip to the dealer. (edited to add image -- sideways, not sure how to use this forum) Last edited by CAtoMA; 04-27-2023 at 12:12 PM.. |

Very "normal". It took around 2-3-years for BMW to sort out the issues in iDrive 7 (ID7) from 2018 when it was released, and some people still have issues today.
ID8 is completed new, so those taking delivery of the new LCI cars will be the first wave of debuggers, so I'd expect lot's of bugs. BMW has become really efficient at using its "paying customers" to sort out its ID issues, to the point that I'll never buy a first release BMW again, especially with a new version of iDrive. Try resetting ID8, those of us with ID7 do it by holding down the on/off volume switch for around 30 seconds, but ID8 hasn't got pysical buttons anymore - so I am not sure how its done now. |

The only thing that "changed" overnight was my activation of the X5 built-in SIM card with AT&T. (As an aside, might anyone know how to test whether this is actually working/active or whether I'm setting $$ on fire?) I'm going to choose to believe this was a one-time event for my own sanity, but tend to agree with you that we're the beta testers (yeah despite the iX being available etc etc -- that is a moot point as every car is slightly different, which requires slightly different software or configs, which can have big impacts on software QA). I'll add that some of these poorly-written embedded operating systems and software have a hardware nanny that basically resets the hardware every X hours. It is the failsafe to handle spaghetti code with memory leaks etc. I see it all the time. My guess is something like that saved the day after iDrive 8 leaked itself into a bad state. |

The system does, at least in previous versions, a sleep reset after being untouched for awhile.

Where you don't see hardware nanny / "sleep reset" nonsense is on smart phones or modern computers -- which can go for years without resets. One day, we'll get there, but we're really early days with these car user experiences. |

It will be for some models and 8.5 is supposed to bring a much better experience. The problem is that, at least in the US, BMW has not said for certain that they will update pre-July X5's to 8.5. They are supposed to issue a press release next month.

Sounds like you got the “Black Screen of Death” :-). Mine has done this 2 or 3 times, I think it’s a silent OTA that starts the issue and needs to finish so it shuts down the iDrive until done. One thing I noticed is that if you are in an area with poor cell service, like me, it will happen maybe few times when you get in an area with good service until the iDrive catches up.
I haven’t confirmed this with BMW but doubt they would anyway. The reason I think this makes sense is, I used to get these strange things on my 2016 X5 until BMW decommissioned the 3G network capabilities and my car stopped communicating with BMW. Then for the following 5 years I never had an issue was the best car ever. Now I just got an 2024 X5 xDrive 40i and I’m back in BMW’s world where you4 ultimate driving machine is ultimately different almost every day :-), annoying YES damaging to your car NO. We are lucky, my neighbor has an X7 M that’s had to be towed out of his driveway twice because over night something changed and his car that worked great the day before is now giving him a warning about power loss don’t drive have your vehicle towed to the nearest BMW dealer for service. The dealer service confirmed twice that it was an update that caused the issue. Like my son says, loving your car and hating it at the same time makes it a little more human :-). This is exactly how I view BMW I love them and hate them at the same time but for me, no debate wanted, I can’t find anything else I truly enjoy driving. |

This happened to me once last week. (2024 50e) Not sure if this is why but I had just used the app on my phone the night before to set the charging times and the next morning when I started the car the right screen was black. After a minute or two it came back on.
Hasn’t happened since… |
