Here are some photos I copied from photos of BMW G05's on cars.com.

These photos are acceptable (to me). If the G05 I order comes with this level of wrinkling, gathering, or whatever term is appropriate for this design, I'd be fine with it. These photos show that the manufacturer can make back seats that look good. Look at these photos and compare them to the photos already posted on this thread.

What do you all think of these differences? Should we customers simply put up with it or is there something wrong with the seat manufacturing consistency?

All your pics are the Merino leather which seems better than the pics with the really wrinkly leather which all to appear to be the base leather, maybe they put a bit more effort into the Merino?

Based on what I saw on my dealer's lot, you won't be taking delivery of your new X5 too soon if you want perfection/flat leather. I looked at ten to fifteen 2019 X5s and they all looked similar to the pictures that show some lighter level of wrinkles. None were anywhere near some of the worst wrinked pics we've seen - but they all had'm.

My guess is that what we're seeing in person is "as designed" while some of the for-press-pictures have been photo-shopped by an overzealous marketer. I'd accept some of the lighter/basic wrinkles as being by design/normal but I'd reject some of the really poor examples I've seen.

Do you really think this is a failure and not a design? After all, the BMW is aware that in a moment every motoring newspaper will be reviewing the new model and would rather avoid criticism at the very entrance of the new x5.

I remember there were problems with wrinkled seats when the F15 launched. I worried that mine would be, too. I placed order in Jan 14 and got my vehicle early Mar 14, and no problems with the leather at all. My car is in QA, so hopefully no wrinkles. I think the pictures shown on this thread (except the last few) look atrocious.

Good catch. It was unintentional. I was just looking for back seat images that looks like they had less wrinkles. I didn't notice that they were were all Merino.

Here are a bunch of images of the base leather seats. They show varying degrees of wrinkles, some worse than others but the photo quality and the lighting can play tricks. I'll have to look at them in person before I choose.

I wouldn't be nervous if I was buying off the lot. I'd just keep looking until I find one that looks like the wrinkles somewhat symmetrical. However, I want to order it from the factory.

Personally I think I'll be going with the Merino.

Well you could be like me and buy one 10 days ago and when you are about to sign paperwork they say oh you can not take the x5 as it has a gps and entertainment module that needs to be changed because of recall. Thing is we dont know when that part is going to get here and it is sent out by vin number not by if a dealer needs it or not. So it could be 2 days or it could be weeks. Word for word what they told us. My wife loves this X5 and doesnt want anything else. So yep, we have waited 10 days, still nothing, good thing is we didnt sign all the paperwork only some of it so we can back out when we want. But we all know that isnt going to happen because she is in love with that specific x5. lol. But they gave us a new 18 x5 to drive around until ours is ready.

Picked mine up two days ago, and yes, the back seat was a little wrinkled... but very mildly. I had warned my wife about the possibility, and she is pretty picky, but she looked at and opined that she didn’t think it looked bad at all. We have pretty good leather furniture at home and the best leather will wrinkle, sooooo, we’re ok with it.

Exactly... that’s bs...cya...so they don’t have to replace thousands of back seats, they sure don’t show that on their configurator...

Similar thing happened to me last night. We went to pick up the car and signed the paperwork only to be told the car needs to stay there because there is some software updates they need to contact bmw for.

I managed to get the car synced with bmw connect so I can track its location and see its cameras Incase someone decides to take it home lol.

Exactly. If this was "normal and necessary" for leather seats, every BMW seat, front and rear, every leather couch, every leather lounger, every leather dining chair, would have these wrinkles all over it.

Between a rock and a hard place

I'm so trying to be okay with these wrinked-by-design rear seats that BMW thinks are okay to push on its customers. I love the car in total so much that I'll probably just settle. I'd rather have the base leather without the bed mattress pattern but the rear seats with the base leather don't look good to me while the rear seats with Merino leather look okay.

What to do, what to do?

Maybe I'll get the base leather and then head down to Walmart and pick up this niffty product. I don't have a dog but I'd just use it as a seat cover to make the rear seats look better.

You guys are like all those people that said if Trump won they were moving to Canada. All this talk about not gonna buy the car because of the leather, but you still do.
