Detailing car - how to make it last

Hi,

I detailed my car two days ago. It is now covered in microdust from driving on the highway.

How do you make the detailing last?

Dust and things are always going to get on the car.... Your best thing you can do is maintenance washes between details. If the car has some sort of coating (wax, ceramic, hybrids) then really all you need is foam cannon and water. Most coatings will last at least 6 mo. and some have years claimed. Oh don't forget to dry so not to have spots. NEVER USE A DUSTER ON PAINT!!!!!

Impossible to avoid dust and dirt completely. I am a big fan of Zaino products. Their Z-6 detailing spray has anti-static properties which they claim reduce dust and dirt pick up by 60%.

1. Don't drive it

or

2. If you break rule 1, then just remember that your detailed car simply sits just below the micro dust.

Really, that's why I mostly buy medium color cars. All the time spent cleaning and I see dust on it just from sitting in the garage

I'll buy some and do 1/2 my hood with it and see if there's a difference

Sounds good, but how long will it take you to count all of the specs of dust?

If your car is white I would look for a monthly subscription car wash around you. Mine is $40/month unlimited times. Make sure it won't mess up the wheels.

If your car is not white I recommend you wash it yourself .. every weekend. That's what I do and my neighbors think I am crazy.

My car is black and nothing can be done. In the other places I lived there was constant rain or snow making my car become dirty after 4-5 days. I thought moving to California would solve that but the thing gets coated in dust within a few days.

I used to be an every weekend washer then realized it was going from being a hobby to a chore. Now I just do the waterless thing and handwash occasionally. Saves time and money.

Don't drive it and keep it locked in a shed and then vacuum seal the entire shed and then throw the key in the pacific ocean. Oh and don't forget to use the indoor car cover and then an outdoor car cover before you throw the key away. Just saying

What do you use for your “waterless thing?” It’s unbelievable hot here in the summer which is basically half the year and it rains every Monday so it takes all the fun out of doing a 2 hour weekend wash. Something less labor intensive between full washes would be great.

I'm new to it so I don't even know what the best stuff is. I hear ONR (optimum no-rinse) a lot online but when I do a search it's sort of expensive. I've been loyal to Meguiar's for years when it comes to my car needs so I rolled with their product. It was like $6 bucks at Wal-Mart and is supposed to last for 4-5 applications. Seems to work but I hope I'm not marring up the paint lol.

I'm sure it rains more often than that in Memphis. When I lived in Michigan it was like every 3-4 days.

I use the California duster between washes. It is pretty gentle and doesn't create scratches as far as I can tell. My cars don't get really dirty, they just get a light coat of dust when I go out for the day so dusting at the end of the day works pretty well for me.

Even if you follow best practices, every time you wash your car, it creates microscratches on the paint. A good polish/detail will repair those but I try to avoid washing my cars too often.

Awesome thanks. I’ll check out some of the waterless products. I do like Meguiar’s stuff.

A duster wouldn’t work for me because it rains a lot here. Right now it’s just raining enough to spot things up and not much more.

I'd have a bad feeling about using this product or any spray on/wipe off washes without thoroughly rinsing off the car first. Seems like you'd just be inviting swirl marks on your paint. If you don't care about swirls then just go to the local hand wash place and save yourself 90 minutes - unless you enjoy detailing your own car.

Most water less that I have seen are actually for after you wash it clean... I too do not trust them with dirt on the car. Like I suggested up top simply buy a foam cannon for your hose (or pressure washer) spray the car wait 5 - 10 min rinse off and done...

What about the spotting? Even with ceramic coatings water spots will form. The shop I had put on my ceramic advised me never to let tap water dry on the paint.

I used to use the Mr Clean Auto Dry on another car and let it air dry per the instructions and that car got really ugly spots from our tap water here even though it was supposed to be filtered by the Auto Dry filters.

Two options here, I have a softwater unit for my house that works perfectly for the rinse.... OR you can buy waffle weave microfiber towels say from The Rag Company on Amazon for dirt cheap and do a quick once over with it. I would do on per side split the car down the middle so buy two or three to be safe.

It's definitely weird to use this product on a dusty car, but I simply do not have time for hand washing anymore and will not for 3 years at least.
