Grille vents open, fan on full after ignition off - 30D

Last night wife arrived after normal commute home. 25km (~15 miles) drive, cool 7 degrees c (~ 40 degrees f), free flowing traffic 110kph/80kph (~65mph/50mph), parked in garage, shutdown, radiator fan was on full (very loud roar btw) and grille vents open. Car smelled hot. No check lights on, car status all green and engine temp was at about 1/2.

Rang BMW service at local dealer who suggested possibility of a regeneration burn in progress just before arrival - that seem logical? New G05 30D only on 3rd tank of diesel, regeneration happens that often? Why would regeneration effect radiator fan and grills?

Any other ideas?

All seemed normal today. Round trip commute, no similar occurrence either outbound or on return home - normal shutdown at both ends of commute.

Garage List
It has happened to me a few times before.

It is quite annoying and embarrassing to park your car near friends/family and your fan is on full blast.

This happened on my Touareg TDI as well. I was told it was normal. I did not know it had to do with regen but that is cool to know.

It happens to me quite often. Usually after normal trip between 10-15km. I was worried at first time but somehow seen many people having this so I'm not the only one.

Completely normal for today's Turbo vehicles. It is to prevent coking inside the turbos by allowing them to cool down. On my 50I there is two radiator systems, one for the typical engine another for the aux/turbo. Here in AZ I have parked inside the garage left the door open until the fans stop and then I can close the door.... I have seen it run up to 15 mins after.

I started to always pop the rear lid on my 911’s when pulling in my garage to let the heat escape. I still do this with all my performance BMW’s. It’s just a easy and effective way of cooling down your engine. These TT turbo engines almost always run the fan after stopping.

Fully agree!!!

My neighbors model 3 overheated in his garage this week... Yes a battery can overheat.. LOL He started doing what I've done and leave it open. I just tell Alexa to shut the door when I get the 15 min notification its been open.

My 40i does the same, but only after a rather spirited drive in Sport mode in the last few miles leading up to the house. Runs for 60-90 seconds after pulling into the garage and then turns off.

It's never been cause for concern to me because it's only associated with my driving or occasionally on some of the near 100 degree Fahrenheit days we've had here last month on very short trips (<1mi).

It is DPF burning. But when the fan is still blowing after you turn off the car then the engine was in the middle of a regeneration(not 100 % sure)

Exactly my thoughts on conditions that might need an extended cool down but as I said in my post it was a cold day, free flowing drive (not stop and go) and after the wife's normal commute (she is a comfort mode driver never hard on the throttle). The fan has never remained on before (and as noted quite obvious when it does) under worse conditions for cooling, warmer days, shorter trips, and traffic. The G05 is still relatively new and has yet to have had the turbo exercised

I believe this is normal. Still waiting for the BMW 30d but the Volvo D5 diesel engine does that as well. As normal procedure I let the engine run on idle 30 sec/1 minute before shutting it down after high speed driving. The radiator fan continues and can run up to 5 - 10 minutes depending on the engine and ambient temperature outside.

Your turbo's are engaged at 1500rpms and above. They basically are always working. Its good to have cooling after an engine stops no matter what TBH, stale static air causes heat to stay longer and rise. Heat kills engines just like electronics, thus BMW triggers after shut off cooling. It think this is super common now I mean my F150 3.5eco did the same thing just not as long.
