Dealer Charging for ID7 software updates??

Are folks finding that their dealer service depts are charging $$$ for updating the ID7 software? I had mine updated for the first time yesterday since purchase delivery in Dec 2018. It went from 11/2018 .48 to 3/2019 .60
The service dept charged @$200 for updating the software. This was not paid by me, but I was told they generally only do it for free if there is a recall. I explained there are so many bugs...but just wondered what others are finding.

Mine told me to bring it by whenever there is an update, of course schedule an appointment. He never said anything about cost....... I would find another dealer.

Dealer gets paid by BMW for iStep upgrades (in most cases). One of the steps is they have to record it properly on the receipt in order to be reimbursed by BMW.

They "charge" that fee, but I didn't have to pay. My dealer is the tits.

What happened with Over The Air update? Why even visiting a dealer for software upgrade?

Because OTA updates only upgrades certain modules in the car. To do a full software upgrade will continue to require a visit to dealer and an ISTA programming session.

Can someone perhaps provide a better explanation? I have seen reports from members of this forum performing OTA updates and their iDrive firmware versions incremented to 3/2019.60 (or similar pattern). I really think OTA and dealer updates are the same, it's just OTA is not fully happening for all the cars out there yet, only small batches are cleared for OTA upgrades. So if you really need it and insist, then dealer can do it in offline mode. Otherwise it's a full iDrive firmware version that gets upgraded in both cases.

The point was they shouldn't be charging for it in the first place.... I will have to dig around but this question came up before someone posted about the updates are free to the customer. Eventually everything will be OTA anyway... Dealer put smoke screen up!!!

OTA will update your iDrive firmware. Only certain modules are updated through OTA. There's several modules in a modern BMW, approximately 17, however the number is based on how the car is optioned.

In order to fully update all modules it will require a ISTA programming session.

I hear ya. As with most dealerships the Sales and Service are separate entities. The Service says there is a charge, and my SA covered the cost somehow on his end. But I agree 100% they shouldn't even be trying to get owners to pay.

If service didn't charge or something, every two months hundreds of cars would be coming in for updates. Plus it takes hours. They'd never have time to actually work on cars. BMW is going to have to get better with OTA's or dealers will be swamped. Mine just has to document some "issues" then they'll do the update so they can charge BMW for it as warranty repair work.

Dealers should not be charging for something owners are suppose to have had from day 1. I love my 40i and intend on getting another when my lease is up however if I’m ever charged for any update I’ll pass on the update and any future purchase of a BMW.

jasrboyd is right. Updates at this stage of the game are to correct issues with features/options that were advertised when you bought your X5 but didn't work, such as cornering light, etc and BMW needs to fix the others such as Connected Drive, Apple Carplay, Comfort Access, Lane Guidance, Remote Start, Bluetooth connection errors (though these could be phone/device issues as well), Remote 3d view issues, KAFAS cam issues, etc.
Certainly other issues not related to software are covered, why would a software update not be covered to fix the above?

I agree with them charging for updates but there are a couple of exceptions. If the update is to add something which should have been present (like caring car etc) then it should be foc also if the car is in for a service it should automatically be updated foc during the maintenance. If my dealer tries to charge me under either of those two conditions I will be looking for a new dealer!

Doc5513:

Did the dealer ask you to pay $200 or did you just see the charge on the ticket?

If they did not ask you to pay, it could be an internal charge or a warranty charge to BMW.

Softwate Update

My 2020 X5 update is in the car but won't start installation. Dealer charges $498 to install.
