Rumormill: Audi S6/RS6, S7, S8 power numbers revealed

So the M5 engine is already beat and it hasn't hit production yet.

Toward the end of 2012, Audi will unleash the RS6, which will carry a BMW M5-besting, 580-horsepower version of the same twin-turbo mill powering the S6. We still don't know how big the proposed engine is – earlier reports have suggested that a 4.0-liter V8 is in store – but it should get 20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing naturally aspirated V10.

Wow Audi is wasting money on these engines. So the outgoing TT V10 5.0 of the RS6 won't make it to any other model? What was the point of that beautiful motor? I really hope these V8s are a worthy successor

Interesting...

Should be about the same relative speed though with the parasitic losses associated with the Quattro system. Real question will be the weight and who's got the better chassis.

It's the same motor as the new 4.0 in the new Bentley Conti. Mercedes already out powered the new M5, I think if I was shopping for an M5 I'd probably buy the Alpina B5 instead, it looks better, almost as fast and not everyman and his dog will have one.

The new A6 is lighter than the 5 series so it will be very interesting to see if Audi manage to maintain that with the RS6. Can't wait to see S6/RS6. I'm not a fan of the A7.

Doesnt make any sense. A factory twin turbo Lambroghini V10! They made the last RS6 for 2 years and now a whole new engine. They could have at least found a way to put it in the R8.

Maybe they should invest the money in suspension

The A6 also looks good. It's tempting to jump ship and grab an S6.

The V10 was heavier and less fuel-efficient while providing no greater level of performance. They didn't technically develop the engine from the ground up either considering a lot of its design is carryover from Lamborghini.

Weight balance and fuel efficiency will be more important. I can understand the reason for change.

Something tells me the S63Tü engine in the M5 has far more than 560hp, considering the X5/6M's S63, which it's based on, has 550hp, and the Tü has a much higher compression ratio, higher redline, and significantly more boost. You would think that would net more than 10bhp, no?

I too think that. They seem to offer conservative ratings on their boosted engines for some reason. Advertising a higher hp would surely be a nice advertising point, I wonder why they don't do it.

Insurance purposes? Breaking 600hp in a family sedan might be much.

Insurance is a potential reason. It could also throw off competitors as they finalize their products to meet a standard set by what's been released (i.e. eventual RS6). It can also make the cars seem strangely efficient when they're thrown on dynos as the reported power at the wheels will be far higher than guessed.

Or all of this guesswork is useless and the car is actually producing the claimed 560hp. We won't know until someone straps it to a dyno.
