Is the X5 45e the right choice for me? Need help deciding

Hi everyone. I live in Massachusetts and drive 70 miles a day round trip 4 days a week for work and am heavily considering getting the X5 45e for my commute. So with rising gas prices and my long commute, is the 45e the ideal choice? I do have the capability to charge at home every night so will I not need to fill up gas for a considerable amount of time? It does get pretty cold here in January and February (below 20 degrees) so should I be worried about the battery not functioning optimally during the colder months?

I also have a g80 xdrive on order that will hopefully get here by September/October, but who truly knows. I'll probably drive the m3 once a week to work for fun and also use it on the weekends.

Here's a recent thread here with some good real-world mpg numbers:
https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...hlight=45e+mpg

As far as whether the 45e is the ideal choice, that's too general of a question with just rising gas prices and a long commute as your two considerations.

Do you really need an SAV? If not, the i4 eDrive40 would be my choice if I wanted all-electric miles and didn't need the cargo capacity nor the towing capability of the X5. At least at this point, until I see the IX in person.

Due to your long(ish) commute, you won't be able to drive entirely in electric every day. But, compared to a 40i, you'll still save on gas.

As an owner of a 45e myself, I do suffer from confirmation bias…however, I don't see any negative trade-offs by choosing the PHEV over the ICE version of the X5. And every increase in gas prices makes the case for hybrid that much more compelling.

My wife is expecting twins in July so it'll be the 4 of us so we will need an SUV.

Depending on how long the charging cable is, I mighttttt be able to charge it at work.

If you can get access to a level 2 charger at work then you could in theory get 30-40 miles of electric driving each way on your commute. That could give you ~50% EV driving which would certainly make a difference on gas costs.

That said, have you considered an EV? For your use case that might make more sense.

i4 is a hatchback, which, if it is anything like my 2018 330 GT was, has massive amounts of storage space. Compared to my X3, the 330i GT would have been better with a stroller and baby bag due to the longer lay down length. I don't know the specs for the i4, but now that they are arriving at dealers, you may want to investigate. Allocations are slim for those as well though...

I loved my F15 X5 40e, especially when tooling around in the DC area where I used to live. Close in parking was available at a lot of places for a PHEV, a nice perk. I had a much, much shorter commute (thankfully), but it was nice being able to be on electric during the stop and go part and then gas if the road opened up at all.

Congrats on the twins and GL on your decision.

I ended up placing an order for the X5 45e today. MSRP with $1000 off for loyalty.

I test drove a 45e and it was sweet. My wife likes the size of her X3 too much to change, and I wanted a sporty-ish sedan so I bought an M550i instead of a 45e.

With gas prices continuing to skyrocket causing a huge increase in PHEV orders and interest, do you guys think more discounting off MSRP may boomerang resulting in higher discounting on gas vehicles?
