BMW towing trailer backup assist review - Good and usable

This might be a less known and feature that BMW might never advertised; I discovered it in a surprise when backing up with a trailer.

For folks like me who is new to towing a trailer, backing up with a trailer is something very very hard until you learn it. BMW does have a "parking assistant" system that is for trailer. It can be engaged in parking screen when trailer is connected, and is driven for a few yard (car need to learn the trailer's maneuvering behavior).

Idea is, you set the relative angle between the trailer and car using iDrive screen or iDrive rotating controller. Then, you manually control the brake and gas, the car automatically takes over the steering wheel to maintain the trailer back up angle you want. Note, you still need to control the brake / gas yourself; it does not work like regular parking assist where car take over everything to get into selected spot.

It is overall a very usable feature, and I did back up a uhaul trailer down a boat launch for launching/taking out a inflatable motored boat with no experience on backing up with trailers before.

Here is a recording -

I think there is a better tutorial video someone made with a X7 before -

Enjoy!

This must be new to the LCI unless it’s a hidden feature somewhere. Pretty cool.

It is in the user manual for MY24 (not sure about earlier MY). Neither the online configurator nor BMW's marketing material seems to mention this feature. Sounds like a hidden gem.

I believe OS 8.0 was the first to have this - a significant advantage over iDrive 7 for those who tow. Used the Mercedes version - trailer manoeuver assist - does make reversing a trailer easier and less stressful
