Had the same issue with my transfer case at 52k miles - BMW service fixed it by flushing fluids. Had to pay $700.

Now my front diff is blown at 53k miles - BMW is fixing it on "good will" but I still have to pay $1,300 out of pocket.

Never was a guy to buy warranties, but now I'm strongly considering it knowing how expensive these components are to fix and how short (presumably) they last. Looking for some recommendations on good ones. Otherwise my wife will make me trade in the car - which I love BTW so I don't want to have to do that.

Hopefully nothing else goes wrong. Once she thinks about it a bit she will realize that even most expensive repairs are cheaper than buying a new vehicle.

Were there any warning signs prior the failure?

No. Just a very low grinding noise at low RPMS. My only regret is not bringing in the car at 49k miles and asking them to check on all the things that seems not so right.

Is it a 40i?

Im hearing noises at low rpm too, the noise i hear is synchronised with the rpm and disappears maybe after 3k. At highway speed i dont hear anything. I tried opening the hood and have my wife rev the engine but i couldn't hear the sound, feels like it only makes the noise while driving.

Mine is a M50i. Mine you could hear starting at around 1200 rpm and would go away around 1900. Could only duplicate it while in gear, didn't make the sound in park revving the engine.

Edit: I would definitely take it to the dealer. Especially if you're under warranty.

Thanks for your quick response!
Did it sound like it was synchronized to the rpm too? I think i need to get it checked before my warranty ends soon!

Yes it was easily replicated by manipulating the RPMS. Definitely take it to the dealer. Especially since you're still in warranty. This is an $8k fix.

Im now in the same situation w 75k km on the car. Happen 1 week outside of warranty and I had a cop inspection done in case I wanted extended warranty. Shudder was small, changed fluid. Now I back up in my driveway and the car shakes. Only when the wheel is turned.
I bought the car out from lease thinking I could wait while the issues with the 50e were sorted out.
Rethinking bmw. So upset about all the issues I’ve had and how they treated me. I was nothing but understanding but frustrated and then this.
They said bmw were offer a discount. So rather than $12k it’ll be 9k?
Only other car I could switch to is a cayenne?
So upset about this.

Op - which dealer are you with. Seems to be nicer than mine.

I’m sorry to hear about what you’re experiencing. I was at Parkview BMW which is where I bought the car from. Which dealership are you at?

Parkview as well. I have to talk to Sal and see if they can budge on this.
Thanks
