My thought is to follow the Condition Based Service guidelines. Modern oils are vastly superior compared to the old school of oil change frequency. My M60i gets it's second oil service next week @ 22,000 miles.

I raced motorcycles for 30 years and always changed the original oil at 100 miles instead of the recommended 600 miles that all the manufactures called for. Almost always saw little metal chips in the first oil change. I can't get this out of my head thus on all of my new cars I still drop the original oil at 1000 miles. Probably not necessary but it puts my mind at ease. I also do all of my own service on my cars and enjoy doing it so that helps with the costs. Did my new M60i at exactly 1010 miles and I sleep better at night. YMMV

I plan to keep my X5 for a while, so plan to change the oil myself within the first few hundred miles. Maybe a waste but cheap insurance for longevity. Q is if I also do the diff fluid.
