If you read my previous posts, I clearly stated that that my argument is that from a marketing POV, BMW considers the M50i to be an M while from a technical POV, it's not. That's the sole reason why I provided the link to the configurator, stating that there is an argument for both sides. When you provided your link, you flat out denied that the M50i could be considered an M whatsoever and I pointed out that it's not that simple. It would be interesting to obtain an official statement about this from BMW... If it was as easy as black and white, do you honestly believe we had 5 pages about this topic?

I think it’s a brave New World for BMW obviously seeing and addressing the need for variations of M models within the M division. We have never had this before. What this did instead of watering down the M division, it allowed them to tune M cars even further toward the track like CS models. This is why you now can have your M flavors from sporting Road car all the way to Track car and in between still wearing the “M” badge on the back.
It’s not a bad thing unless you are a elitist trying to twist the M division into chest thumping the idea you there is only one kind of “M car” and you either are in the club or not. Those days are over by BMW’s own hand and the M club is a lot bigger with more definitions of what they can be. Amen and time for a beer. |

Earlier, I mentioned the E60 M5. Just look how things developed: The current M550i would run circles around it - LOL! Not too long ago, I read an article about the M5 and the one who wrote it stated that the M5 became so powerful that it lost its previous level of comfort which was present on the former generations. So this new M 'entry-level' might also be BMW's approach to bridge that gap for those who still want decent performance yet still a solid level of comfort which you may not find anymore on a CS. All I can say is that while I owned my X7 M50i, I had a little chrome M-keychain next to my key and I never felt guilty about it.

But the M550i is LITERALLY replacing the 550i in the lineup. The "M entry level" always existed, just the BMW marketing department hadn't called it that yet.

Even the 550i was quicker than previous M-models. Everything moved up. The current 40i is the former V8. And if a vehicle reaches 500+ HP, why not market it under the performance-label?

This is purely a marketing exercise. Anyway... performance is more than just a horsepower bump. The m550i is dynamically nearly identical to the 540i with m-sport optioned suspension.

Check this out. In the BMW M Model website, there is no mention of anything other than pure “M” vehicles: No M50i, no M550i… You can only build “M” vehicles through the BMW M site. I know what I think this means. Y’all can figure it out for yourselves, maybe. |
