Ever since I got the 07/2020 update, Apple CarPlay won't work unless you're connected to the in car Wi-Fi network. The problem is that as soon as I get home, my iPhone wants to connect to my home Wi-Fi network.

So what happens is as soon get home, park, and I shift the vehicle to the "drive ready" state by pushing the engine start/stop button, the bmw Wi-Fi stops and my phone connects to the home Wi-Fi network.

I don't really mind this behavior when I get home but when I'm about to leave to a destination, the phone doesn't automatically join the bmw network when it's still parked in my garage. So I have to pull my phone out and manually join the bmw network. This seems to happen intermittently. I have it to auto join the network but it seems the phone gets confused whenever I get home and defaults to joining my
home network.

Prior to 07/2020, this transition was seamless because I didn't have to join the bmw network in order to use CarPlay so just having Bluetooth enabled was enough; but now they changed the protocol I guess. Do any Id you have a similar experience to mine? Do you have a work around?

I’ve noticed an even more annoying quirk since upgrading: because I am connected to CarPlay via wifi now, the phone cannot send/receive data. I tried to let my son watch paw patrol on my phone while we were on a long trip and no-go: I could not stream it because the phone was connecting to wifi instead of getting internet data from the mobile provider. Also, the phone stopped sending and receiving WhatsApp messages... less of an issue because I don’t check those while driving, but still annoying when I get out of the car and am bombarded by missed messages!

If there’s a way to go back to bt only I’d love to know.

Did you turn off low Data mode? When my iPhone connected to the car that was turned on by default in the settings

No... is that an iPhone setting or a car setting?

If you haven't extended the data plan, you will lose connectivity outside of the car. The X5 comes with 2Gigs (?) data cap, after that you need to get a plan with the provider. Which for the US is AT&T. I had to connect with BMW Connected Drive to find the number of the car and then create an account with AT&T at https://myvehicle.att.com

its a setting in iOS, not the car. Once you're connected to the car's wifi network, open your phone's settings and click on the BMW wifi network, you'll see toggle switch for 'low data mode'. turn that off.

Nothing was changed with the update and no settings need to be changed on the iPhone. It looks like what happened was that you connected your phone to the X5's WiFi, perhaps for downloading the update, and didn't disconnected it. Just go into the WiFi connections on your phone and disconnect and forget the X5 WiFi.

CarPlay uses WiFi but that connection is handled by CarPlay. The phone is paired using Bluetooth and then it automatically creates a WiFi connection.

Thanks guys. I’ll try those fixes next time I’m in the car. Darn lockdown has me staying home wayyyyy too much, and it’s too cold to just go sit in the car to play!

I also observed issues with WiFi after upgrading to 07/2020. Looks like my phone can't use internet when connected to in-car WiFi for carplay functionality. I've tried to remove and add phone connection again but it didn't help...

CarPlay should not be directly connected to WiFi. Just make the connection with Bluetooth and will take care of the WiFi connection behind the scenes.

If you subscribe to the data plan with your carrier, it is supported to use the car hotspot along with wireless CarPlay.

Obviously but that is not the case in the issues we are discussing.

You have to turn off low data mode on the iPhone when your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi with CarPlay in your car. I had the same problem since iOS 14 and 07/2020

I have problems with carplay on G05 cutting out sound on a highway.
The problem occur when on highway have a lot of roads around or bridge.
Never happened on other slower roads.

For a fraction of second, google maps and music streaming from youtube cuts out, then working for a few minutes withot problem and than again cuts out.

Does someone had the same issue?

Regards

Does it always happen at the same spots? Could be WiFi interference.

I need some clarification. I have Verizon account. How do I verify that the car is using this account rather than the car's account for data? Thanks for any answers to this queary.

Going through your phone's connection is the way CarPlay is set up to work as long as you don't have the WiFi Hotspot enabled with ATT and connected to your vehicle's WiFi.

I think that is on the same areas, but if it is wi-fi problem, is there any chance to resolve it?
I did reboot phone and radio but nothing better.
