Seeking opinions on X4 M40i vs x6 xDrive40i
Sorry for this silly tread, but I’m having a hard time deciding between an X4 M40i and a base X6 and wanted to hear some opinions, especially if anyone has compared these or similar vehicles such as the X3 M40i and base X5. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to drive an M40i, but I have driven a base X3 and a base X5. Here are my list of pros and cons for each one:
X4 M40i Pros: - B58 engine tuned to 382 hp instead of 335 hp in the X6 - Smaller/more appropriately size for me, I would imagine more nimble, agile than the X6. - About 10k less expensive - Option for Tanzanite blue, which is likely the color I would otherwise pick - Option for HK audio - LCI already here, likely last version until next iteration for what that’s worth - Not missing too many options that would be otherwise be available despite the microchip shortage, unlike base X6 which as far as I can see is missing air suspension, dynamic handling package, cooled/heated cups, premium audio, soft closed doors, acoustic glass etc in 2022. However I don't think any of these would be standard regardless and would likely significantly increase the price of the X6 if they were available. X6 xDrive40i - I would imagine the ride is less firm/more comfortable vs the M40i, which is a positive for me - Option of luxury seats package with Merino leather, with ventilated and massage seats. I have read the ventilated seats on the X4 make the seats less comfortable and are not a recommended option. From what I experienced on the base X3, the Vernasca leather in the X4 also seemed quite firm. - More luxurious interior, with glass controls, heated armrest, panoramic sky lounge, ? better materials - Icon adaptive headlights with laser lights. The X4 seems to lack true adaptive headlights. I’m coming from an F82 M4, but looking for a more comfortable ride overall, especially going into winter. Thanks for reading. |

My mother has a G05 X5 M Sport 40i, which I'd imaging is the same thing as the X6. I'd say to go for the X6 is you want a legitimately nice interior, adequate power, and the bragging rights of a more "prestigious" model if that's important to you. However don't expect the vehicle to have any sporting pretentions. The steering is finger-tip light even in sport mode and completely numb, the ride is floaty, and there is noticeable body roll.
I haven't driven the X4 M40 but I have driven the X4M and it is a completely different beast. It drives far more as a BMW should and while the interior is a downgrade, it's still nice enough [for me]. Also, while this is my personal bias, the X6 looks stupid especially when not equipped with M Sport pkg cosmetic upgrades. And even then it is a hopelessly unattractive car.

I'm trading my F26 X4M40i for a X6 40i M Sport.
I previously owned an E70 X5, a V8 and a good amount of options most important of which was the suspension and active roll bar. That X5 cornered as well as my M2. The active roll bar also keeps the SUV surprisingly flat around corners. You really need to drive one to see. Unfortunately, it's not an option on the 40i and requires at least an M50i and I'm not doing a V8 again. So the X5/X6 can be very nimble depending on the suspension options so don't let the size dissuade you. For me the X5 was too big and the X4 seems to fit the bill nicely. I still love the X4 and would recommend it but it's not as plush as the X6 and I do want a bit more room again. Not that the X4 seemed small. My X4 (Xenon/2018) and the X6 (LED) both have adaptive lights. Not sure what you mean by "lack true adaptive headlights" but my X4 and M2C (LED) adaptive lights perform the same. I cannot rationalize the laser lights b/c they are essential high beams which I rarely have an opportunity to use. All of the COVID missing options you listed are extra and increase the price. The one that would be nice to have is the dynamic handling package b/c it adds the active roll bar and 4 wheel steering. I don't have experience w/the latter but people posting here seem to think it's the cats meow. BMW Sky Lounge - Demo If you really want to tick all the options you listed, you may be better off opting for a X6 M50i Last edited by omasou; 10-03-2021 at 07:06 PM.. |

If he ticks all the options he listed he's above the starting price of a M50i. Yes, some items would become standard but others would still need to be checked.
My point was that he needed to set his expectations b/c ticking all the options raise the base price rather quickly making the X6 choice as impractical as comparing to the X6 M50i. |
