Chronic Transer Case Issues - Did Transfer Case Oil Change Fix Your Problem?
I know a ton of people on the forum have experienced jerking while under acceleration at lower speeds. Many of us have experienced jerking or chugging of the tires with a hard turn at low speeds. It is especially notable in reverse with the wheel turned hard.
For those of you that don't know, there is SIB 27 02 20 regarding the issue. The fix from BMW is replacing the the transfer case oil because they note the factory oil does not meet BMW specs. My question is for those that have had the transfer case oil changed. Did it fix your problem? Short term and long term? How many miles on your vehicle since the oil change. I think a lot of us are curious if the incorrect spec'd oil from the BMW factory caused permanent damage or if the transfer case oil change is a long term solution. |

My car is in for this service right now. It is out of warranty and they want to change the fluid ($500). My argument to them is that the SIB says that BMW did not put the correct fluid in in the first case (their words on the SIB) so they should be paying for the correct fluid now, notwithstanding the the fact the car is 6 months out of warranty.
Anybody win this argument? |

I likewise paid for the fluid change ($500). The issue has disappeared so far (it's only been 200 miles since the service was done). BMWNA is not covering the fluid change (at least for vehicles past the 48-month OEM warranty), so don't expect your dealership to do it for no charge. I also have the Platinum warranty and have been assured by my SA that if the issue reoccurs during the extended service contract the transfer case will be replaced under warranty (same as the OP). Based on that I'm good through July 2026.

The SIB doesn't list specific build dates, the 2019-2020 X5 40i's are listed in the SIB.

Bought a CPO 2019 X5 with around 30000 miles.
As soon as I found out the xfer case TSB I sent in my car to get the fluid changed as I want the right fluid in the car! But truth to be told, my car never exhibited the “shuddering” issue and I didn’t feel any difference after the fluid change. Interestingly they found a transmission leak when changing the fluid and it was covered under extended warranty. From what I have read, it seems like this issue happens more often on the v8 50i and M50i models, could it be due to the higher torque from the v8 engine hence producing more stress and wear on the xfer case? Maybe someone can give more insight on this. |
