Picked up a new tdi sportwagen for the wife this last week. Fun little car with decent interior and looks. Looking forward to 40mpg road trips with it for work. Looking into piggyback tune for it but most don't seem to be out as new model for 2015 replacing the jetta wagon. Wife originally wanted subaru outback which are fairly hideous and aren't any fun to drive. Also tried out the new Honda hrv fairly impressive car considering I generally hate hondas. Also the crosstrek. Gutless pos.

I was greatly disapointed by the interior and entertainement system. The option book was also typically german, and to get the same level of gadgets that you'd get standard on a japanese car, I got sticker shock. Walked in thinking I'd get out with one, left running out of here after the drive.

And the looks go hand in hand with price. Why get a car that has barely any features, but costs a pretty penny versus a car with loads more for the same price?! Its a no-brainer.

Let's go back to comparing apples to apples. If you're in the market for a wagon, your choices in the price range are fairly slim. You have basically the Subaru and the Golf Wagon. The Subaru isn't exactly blowing our minds with features either, and one could make the argument that the interior of the VW is miles nicer than that of the Subi. A TDI will also run to several hundred thousand miles and do so burning far less fuel.

Subaru did have more content at similar price but also the interior looked like they let their kindergarten kids come up with the design plans. Also terrible driving experience comparitively, non linear power. Stand it to the floor and wait power.

The Camry is a bigger car. If one could compare equally, it would be with a corolla break, which does not exist.

Besides, the 21300 Break is a pure stripper. There's nothing left of any creature comfort. It is not as bad in the budget version of say the Mazda 3/cx5, or the Nissan SUV that has no engine and whose name escapes me at the moment. These have a number of nice features that VW wants you to pay the option pack for.

The second effect is the very large price differential between the stripper model and the "intermediate" model. You get very quickly very close to the top of the price range you discussed above with VW. Most other brands have a more flat option curve, with the middle model actually sitting in the middle of the price bracket.

That being said, I'm sure it can be an appealing car for some. For one there are not that many car that compete frontally with it. The Forester is clearly for a different kind of crowd, I did cross shop but really the two cars have so little in common purpose that it's a bit silly to compare. The Outback is maybe more on the same focus, but it's a lot larger, and the pricing is not appealing either. It has loads of trunk, returns good mileage (especially so when comparing with SUV which nowadays can get decent city mileage but still suffer from the frontal cross-section on the highway mileage), and it is not a -bad- car. I was just underwhelmed, especially so after I got all pumped up trying the Golf, which was a lot more joyful in terms of handling. At this point, paying close to 28/29k to get what others offer in the 24/25k small SUV ranges didn't make sense since the car was nothing -that- special. Now if only one could make have a 320 touring...

How a nicely made diesel station wagon for <$30k, in the U.S. market no less, gets this kind of critique blows my mind. Only on the web forums.

I will simply say "enjoy!" I am thankful VW at least gives us the option in the U.S. of some nice diesel cars that do not cost $50k+

Thank you I will when I can get it from the wife. We have a 2 diesel family. My daily is a jbd tuned x5d. Wish they had made a 335d wagon and we would have been on that instead.
