X5 45e vs 40i petrol engine
Hi all,
I was just wondering is there any reason behind the difference in power between petrol engine in 45e and 40i? As per Wikipedia, they both have B58B30M1 engine, but in 40i it produces 340PS and in 45e only 286PS. Are these engines completely the same or is there maybe any difference in turbo chargers? Even when you take a look at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B58 there is no word about 286PS version in 45e. Any thoughts? |

same engine, just down sized to 286hp.
that's why remapping the 45e gives you these hallucinant figures: https://www.br-performance.be/en-be/...018/10815-45e/

The engine for the same reason. I don't know about the turbo. I found out this weekend that if I put my car is sport directly after turning it on, it is at working temperature after 2 minutes. Is this as fast as an fuel only car? Or is an supplemental heater heating up the oil faster? |

I'd love to know the more exact difference between the 2 engines...in order to see how safe it would be to tune the engine... it is possible they detuned it to comply with CO2 regulation for that car, and that a chip is all it takes to get the power back...

In normal hybrid mode, you have more Hp than the 40i, and the torque is higher because of the electric motor.
My guess is that the detuning was done for efficiency reasons and the gearing as well. The manual doesn't seem to list the final drive gearing, so I don't know if they're different. Because of the higher torque, the ICE and hybrid could be different. |

Both models are single turbo. They are both twin scroll, single turbo setups.

While BMW does have some engines with two turbos, those with one are usually referred to as twin-scroll, and have several modes so that they spin up faster so the torque is more even across the range versus a smaller one that would not peak out until turning faster. Older designs were really peaky, not providing much boost until it got above a certain speed, then it was somewhat radical.
