Makes no sense why BMW Manufacturing is waiting 2 weeks to close, its going to happen sooner than April 3, 2020.

Apparently Spartanburg has 2 weeks of international parts on hand, thus the April 3rd shutdown. But, this will expose the tier 1 US based parts supplier employees. I see this back firing in the future.

BMW extends shutdown at Spartanburg plant through April 30

https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/04/06/b...ough-april-30/

Quote:
BMW Manufacturing announced today it is extending its shutdown at the Spartanburg plant by three additional weeks. The plant was scheduled to reopen on April 13, but it’s now due to open its doors on April 30th. “We continue to be concerned about the health and safety of the entire BMW workforce. During this time, additional cleaning and disinfecting will be performed at work stations throughout the plant,” officials said in the statement.

Furthermore, BMW says “the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been far reaching, and customer demand for our product has declined considerably. Stay-at-home orders are still active throughout the country and Mexico, which is adversely affecting our supply chain.”

The Spartanburg plant is one of the biggest BMW has around the world. Starting off with a production capacity of 300,000 units, the plant underwent an expansion process taking its capacity up to 450,000.

In 2019, BMW Manufacturing led the nation in automotive exports by value for the sixth consecutive year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce. During 2019, the South Carolina plant exported 246,014 BMW X models with a total export value of approximately $9.6 billion.

The BMWs produced in Spartanburg, South Carolina, were exported through the Port of Charleston, SC (nearly 195,000 units), and through five other southeastern ports: Savannah, GA; Brunswick, GA; Jacksonville, FL; Miami, FL; and Everglades, FL. More than 18,000 BMWs were also exported via rail.

In 2019, the most popular car build in Spartanburg in 2019 was the BMW X5 with 161,096 units made followed by the X3 with 115,088 units. The X7 also had a great year, with 52,619 units being made in the US plant last year, despite arriving rather late to the party.

The company employs approximately 11,000 workers in the Upstate.

No, didn't even start building.

So most likely in July, to be honest not even interested after this big mess.

I have other things to worry about

August is the usual model year change over date for Greer, SC production. If it makes you feel any better, I'm waiting for a allocation for a F83 build prior to August EOP. BMW NA is providing daily updates to the dealerships when the factories will reopen.

So that’s early July delivery? At what point do you just consider cancelling the MY 2020 order and waiting another couple months for a 2021?

My build date was originally week 14 and then got moved to week 21 about a month ago. I haven’t heard yet that it moved again, but it sounds like our production track has been similar up to this point so guessing it will. I think I may just wait for 2021.

One point is that if there isn't going to be any changes on the car then I'd expect the incentives on the 2020 be a lot better than the 2021 models. If not it would make more sense to just get a 2021.

That is more or less my tentative plan - ask the dealer if I can expect any sort of discount beyond the $1,000 loyalty (or whatever it is for the month of June/July) and if not, just cancel and go with the 2021. It’s also possible the 2021 has some additional options to choose from (they are very limited on the 2020 F95).

BMW might not be able to start production immediately after the shelter-in-place order is lifted.

They probably have to do a bunch of things before they can start producing cars: additional worker training and moving work stations around on the production line for safe distancing, make sure that their suppliers can supply them with the necessary components (no point building cars when you don't have engines or seats to install), and making sure that their dealer network can take delivery of newly produced cars.

I would think they used the past 4 - 5 weeks to comply with corona safety rules. That's the case in my country factories used the lockdown to bring everything in order for when they start beginning of May.

If there would be a supply chain problem I don't think they would reopen May 4th.
