Distorted/Rotated SurroundView Camera - Resolved!

One item that made it through quality control when I took delivery of my G06 back in late March was a crooked/rotated/distorted SurroundView camera. To me, it seemed like the driver's side camera was simply rotated a bit.

I noticed it the day I drove it home and figured I'd simply have it looked at during my first service appt. The first attached picture shows the "before" situation, which I thought made it pretty obvious, but others haven't really seen it...

I had to take it in to have something else more urgent dealt with, so I had them take a look at the camera. The Tech didn't believe there was any way to rotate it (he indicated it just fits "one way") and they decided they're replace the camera. Parts took a few days to come in, so I took it back a week later.

During the week that passed, the Tech or Service Manager found that there was a BMW SIB (#66 29 19) out there indicating the problem and rather than replace the camera, it should be shimmed in place using some felt. Recalibration is then needed...I attached a PDF of the SIB below.

In the end, I still don't think it's quite perfect, but it's pretty good and with the fish-eye cameras, there has to be some distortion somewhere as you go out radially from the camera, so I think it's pretty good. I shared a final picture of how it looks now...

Maybe others have run into this and have a better suggestion??

Just wanted to share in case someone else is experiencing this issue.

Was this a brand new car when you got it in March ?

I am currently waiting for my G06 to be built (currently 5300 Pre Assembly Start) so just curious if this is something thats still leaving the factory like this or was a fault that they would have corrected by now.

The SIB is from 5th December, hence the question.

Thanks

Yes, new vehicle. Production date was 3/24/2020. (Delivery date was 3/28/2020.). While I suppose it's possible it shifted in transit, I'd guess it rolled off the line and was simply missed. And, it would be easy to miss. Unless you drove it through some well marked, straight lines, it was challenging to see.

I took delivery of mine March 20/2020. I believe it was fine at first but not 100% sure now and had the same issue with the driver side camera.

I know the bulletins are a bit different between Canada and the States. However, they had to escalate to BMW Puma as they have never seen this before and my work order shows the following:

reset trsvc, updated software including trsvc, allow sleep mode over night and drive at parking lot speed for calibration.

It is fully aligned now. So hopefully that might help you.

This is the before pic (even though I was pretty much perfect straight. I will snap some new ones tomorrow.

Thanks mavjay. They actually did some of the same things with mine (updated the SW, and then re-did the calibration), which did improve it but there was still a bit of a "twist" to it. Hence the reason they were going to put in a new camera. Then, they found the SIB and did a bit more physical tweaking and did the re-calibration, etc.

Mine was in pretty good shape after they did those things...

So, it seems like the first troubleshooting is to update SW, reset things (not sure exactly what...), then re-calibrate the camera(s). If that doesn't do it, then the pull the camera and try to shim it around a bit, then walk back through the reset and re-calibrate...

Been awhile on this thread, but I just wanted to verify that this issue was resolved on my car with the 11/2019.70 iDrive update. Apparently not a hardware problem, in my case, that has been reported elsewhere. Mirror cameras are now perfectly aligned post-update. I'll try to load "after" shots when I get a chance, but this is the "before" issue:

I never noticed it impacting Lane Keeping, etc. Seemed to be cosmetic, but not what you expect from a $95K vehicle!

As noted in some of the details, get your dealer to take a look at it and provide them with the SIBs, etc. Some resolved with just recalibrating the cameras, while others required the camera to be physically re-positioned.

kkratochvil, I'll have to try, I don't think I have any time to visit dealer soon, so I hope this is a quick fix not a day long or drop and we'll let you know type of situation. I will need to visit dealer for state inspection anyway but with Covid I heard registrations might be running late.

Paladin1, that looks perfect! I think you are using remote view, what about in-car view, is it same? I thought software updates were supposed to be over the air. I'll check mine hopefully I am not running v7/2020.54 or it would mean it's camera issue.

In-car view is the same - both are from the 360 cameras. OTA updates are limited as I understand to last version -1 for stability. Mine (7/2020.54) was installed at the dealership, but the camera fix was from the OTA 11/2019 version - no hardware fix involved. I believe the very most current version is up to 7/2020.60.

Hi Paladin,
Confirmed I am on 07/2020.48, so it's possible mine is a hardware issue if the camera issue was fixed on earlier versions.
Was the update a long process, or is it a quick in and out, in case, but I do think I will need to make an appointment to drop it most likely. I got it from a dealer 1:30hr away, hopefully local dealers don't play hardball with service.

Mine was updated with other service that took about a week, so not sure about the time involved but my understanding is it takes a few (maybe 4) hours. Sounds like though you may have a hardware issue since mine was fixed with OTA 11/2019.70, although interestingly, I have two almost identical 40is - mine and spouse's. My camera issue was fixed with the update - my spouse's cameras, which were working fine, were completely tanked by the same OTA update, with the views reversed on the main screen and a dark line through the center. She also had some warranty work and they updated her software to 7/2020.45 and hers were fixed, so the latest software update (7/2020.60 I believe) may resolve yours - worth a try. Our dealer advised that several cars were bricked by OTA 11/2019.70 and had to be reprogrammed. Hopefully BMW has a handle on OTA now, but still guardedly optimistic.

Well I took delivery today and have this issue on the drivers side so clearly there's still something going on with either the initial calibration or the camera hardware. Guess I'll see if they can update it to the latest software to see if it fixes the issue. Thanks for documentation kkratochvil!

Did they know about this issue when you took your X5 in?

I made the appointment yesterday and they were not familiar with it. So I told them I'd bring the SIB with me tomorrow when the drop it off. They want it for half a day, so I figure they're going to try updating everything as part of the fix.

I actually noticed this issue the first time I went to park and my wife was complaining that I was crooked in the space. I insisted I was perfectly straight and she got out of the vehicle to walk around and "check my parking". That's when I looked more closely at the display and you could see where the parking lines did not line up correctly and she was looking at the drivers side one that was askew as I was pulling into the spot.

Thank you, I am still waiting for my registration to arrive, I'll be making an appointment right away for my state inspection and this camera issue, it's extremely annoying, I park in a very narrow garage, and I always go by the lines, if lines are visible I leave enough space for car next to me, if line is not visible I move back and go in. Now I find myself too close the other side since there is no line there. Ugh, first world problems

kkratochvil thanks for posting this and the SIB!

I have the same issue (see picture). I previously drive Mercedes and the Surround View was perfectly aligned, so I thought it's just BMW thing. My car have the latest update (07/2020.54)

I am going to bring this to my dealer for service.

Everyone else having the same issue but repaired by dealer (not software OTA update): how long did it take? Due to COVID, all dealers near my area no longer provide loaner.

I recently developed this issue with first the front camera, and now the rear on my August build M50d. I plan on bringing it up to the dealer when I head there this coming week. Perhaps it'll be a quick software fix.

HubbaHubba13, I left my X6 at the dealer all day, so I really can't say for sure how long it will take. Assuming that they listen to you and take a look at the SIB, I think it's actually a pretty quick fix to remove the camera, turn it a bit and potentially shim it. Once that's done, they have to do a re-calibration of the cameras. I think that mostly entails driving around a bit.

Good luck!

Ah, OK. So it’s just a one day service and you have the car back on the same day.

This is the part that worries me. Had some issue with my previous car HUD and it took 2 dealers and a bit of arguing before the Service Advisor acknowledge the issue. I hope the dealer I am going to tomorrow won’t give me this grief.
