1 car vs 2 cars

Hey guys,

So every since 2010, ive always wanted an X5M but everytime it gets released either somethings happens or i just bought a car.

Now the x5M has beem released and i have a great quote for my dream car. But my issue is as follows

I bought a 2019 cayenne S fully loaded on August 2018( daily driver)
I have a 2017 M2 that i track 5 times a year maybe amd drive on weekends
My local track doesnt allow SUVs, closest track that allows them is 4 hours away( i know its not great to track an SUV but i dont really push the car to its limit)

To get the X5M i would have to trade in both cars but i keep getting Cold feet and hesitating

Would love to hear your views

PS: after driving the cayenne for over a year, its an amazing car but its no bmw and definitely no X5M

Having 2 cars is nice if you can swing it. I enjoyed having an e9x M3 and an SUV for the same reason. I would stick with what you've got. You'll miss the M2 if you don't.

I had a similar situation, with an important twist: my winter/towing SUV was totaled by the insurance company. The result was a trade-in of my beloved near mint and reliable VANOS-retrofitted PY E46M3 plus the insurance settlement for the G05 X5.

In my situation, I didn't have much choice due to space and finances, so I did the effective 2 for 1. In your case, where you have a choice, I would definitely keep the 2 car setup until you can't. I miss the M3 already, but in the end, my SA ended up buying it from the dealer (his employer) after the trade-in, so I have visitation rights :-).

I would have kept it. Looks pristine. I own an E36 M3 and an E30 325is. Looking for a pristine E46 M3 and E30 M3. Yes, will buy both to fulfill my dream.

I think what you have now is quite good. I think you'll miss the M2 if you choose to have 1 car. However you'll enjoy the X5M more than the Cayenne. So what's worth more to you I guess.

It sounds like I’m in the minority here, but I would go with 2-for-1 given the cars you have in play. More specifically, given the upgrade of the X5M over the Cayenne S.

I recently decided that - at least for me - the multi-car ownership arrangement is only preferable to the single car ownership experience if I drive my favorite car the most of the 2 cars. For example, until 2 days ago, I had a 2017 911 Turbo and a 2015 X5 35i as my weekend car and daily driver, respectively. While the 911 has been an incredible ownership experience and a true pleasure to drive, I simply didn’t drive it enough to justify continued ownership...i.e. I wasn’t driving my favorite car the most (no offense to my old ‘15 X5). With 4 kids and a dog, I just didn’t get the opportunity to drive the Porsche as much as I would have liked. I realized that I just wanted to drive my bad ass car everyday...not just on weekends. So my solution was to trade in the Porsche (which happened on Wednesday) and order an X5 M Competition (which also happened Wednesday...at least its in the “order bank”). Once my new X5 MC (MBB/SS) arrives in March/April, I will be driving my bad ass car everyday!

Obviously, if money and/or space were not limited resources for you, then the decision would be super easy - keep the M2, get rid of the Porsche and buy the X5M. Presumably, you are subject to such limitations - as am I - hence your quandary. Keeping my 911 and getting the X5 MC was just a bit too much to stomach...plus my car insurance is already insane with teenage drivers in the house.

That is exactly what im feeling, i would rather have the bad ass car as my daily driver, but as i mentioned my only issue is the track, i enjoy track days and going with our M power group.

Im going to the 4 hours away track to enter with the cayenne since it has all the handling and performance options to try the feel of an SUV, if i find the whole experience (4 hour drive+suv in track) bearable ill probably pull the trigger

In regards to most replies,
1- i dont have the luxury of putting in alot more money , i can squeeze maybe 10k$ max just to make the difference in trade in values of both cars
2- owning an X5M and M2 would be a dream but cant be done
3- i will definitely miss the M2 hence the predicament

gokudo_90 , I would stick with what you have. I had an M3 and Explorer Sport. Going down to one car is nice in terms of insurance and consolidating, but there's days where I miss ripping in the M3 on some backroads. I think the M2 is one of the best, if not best, fun car. There's room to beef it up to meet any itch you might get as well!

At one point, I had 3 different vehicles and at the end of the day...getting in the M3 was like a mini-vacation on demand. Whether it was a 2 hour drive or quick shot to the grocery store 5 mins away...the M cars will always put that smile on your face and make you forget about all the problems in the world!

Keep your current stable. In a couple of years, pick a X5M lease return once you are tired of the Porsche. Win win for now and also later.

I would keep your current garage. If you really enjoy small nimble sports cars, and track them 5 times a year, not to mention enjoy that track day, you are gonna want to keep the M2 and Cayenne. I wouldn't get the X5 M to replace both. The X5 M is a beast, but you will miss the handling and agility of the M2, as well as the ability to go to the nearby track. The X5 M would be fast and comfortable, but you have the higher ride height, the added body roll, as well as a less raw driving experience compared to the M2. Not sure if your M2 has a manual transmission, but that would also be another part of ownership you would miss.

If you do end up going the one car route, you will likely end up taking a bath on both the M2 and Cayenne. That said, would an E63S Wagon be a suitable replacement? I imagine it would offer similar space and power of the X5M while having the benefit of lower center of gravity, as well as a "rareness"/exclusivity and I would think that it would be able to go to the track being that it isn't an SUV and is based on a sedan, as well as a similar price to the X5M.

I'd keep what you have now, especially since the Porsche is nicely optioned plus you enjoy tracking.

Personally, I prefer to have the right car for the right job, which is almost impossible to do with just 1. I'm lucky enough that it's cheap to own 4 cars where I live, so they're all different in their own way.

If you have plenty of space for both then I'd keep what you have. The Cayenne S is plenty enough performance for daily driving and the M2 seems to be satisfying you at the track. I don't know if you would enjoy the X5M at the track as much as the M2.
