PSA: Rear Rattle Fix

So I've had my G05 for about two weeks. I love the car - phenomenal in every way. However, from the very first mile I drove it I noticed a rattle which sounded like it was coming from behind and above me. I would hear it constantly. It was definitely a plastic type rattle, like what you would hear from a loose speaker grill. I spent the better part of an hour trying to isolate the source. Which I think I've successfully done.

It seems the source was coming from the trunk. There's a plastic piece that houses a speaker (Bowers & Wilkins) in the trunk, over the track for the cargo cover. It seems this would vibrate and rattle against the track. My fix was to take some felt tape. Fold it in about a 1/2 inch square, slightly thicker than the gap between the two trim pieces (<1/8"). I did this along the gap every few inches. The rattle now is 95% gone. Which I'm very happy with. Only one part, of one song, would induce the rattle for a very short time and at pretty high volumes. So I'm not very concerned about that.

It seems that another source is behind the speaker grill. If I could remove the trim piece I could probably eliminate it entirely, but I'm too chicken to pull it off because I'm afraid I'll break it.

I hope someone else who has the same rattle finds this PSA helpful.

Its so sad that we have to do this, but thanks for the suggestion. My M3 is full of hidden electrical tape and felt padding in atleast 20 places to stop dashboard and rear seat rattle. Quite pathetic really given the price of these cars, and the lexus the boss drives doesn't have a single rattle.

Rattles can be personal to a particular car and not to its twin. It’s hit or miss.
I always had to do this on my 911’s when the weather temp fell below 70 degrees. Black foam window strip tape is your best friend. I had a A8 with window shades in the back door that could never be fixed. The solution was to leave them up all the time.

Completely agree. Not comparing the M3 to a 911, but my car has similar characteristics as the temperature changes. Just never owned a BMW or Audi that didn't rattle. Lexus and Infiniti's - never had a rattle.

Update:

Took the D-pilar trim pieces off this weekend. Added dynamat to the inside face of the trim and weather stripping to the bottom of the trim. Rattle is entirely gone now!

Wow, was it a big project removing the trim?

No, not at all. They're held on by 4 clips. I used a large flat blade trim removal tool and started from the top. Once one clip comes out the others come out quite easily.

100% chance I would break it trying to take it off

That was my fear too! I was too chicken to try this until I saw another post where the poster installed front and rear cameras. He gave me the confidence to do it.

I have similar rattle issue. In my case, it's the B pillar on driver side. Rattle comes from music with heavy bass. If I press/push onto plastic really hard, rattle goes away. While driving, panel rattling is not an issue.

I have the same case. Does anyone have an idea how to make pillar not buzz at louder bass? I've even thought about professional soundproofing of these side pillars at car-audio workshop (with some kind of foam...), but maybe there are some simpler "home" methods ...?

I way i see if you buy a BMW you need a roll of felt tape if any little noise bothers you. BMW should just include it with the car lol

I've had to use it in all of my bmw's since i am sensitive to any rattles that the car has.
