Anyone else have this? Mine is a November delivery... so only about 5 months old.

Would a replacement be covered under warranty?

Have had mine since August 2019, so a bit longer than you. Seems crazy. I would definitely think and expect the dealer would take care of this. Sorry

It’s not uncommon to see rust on the welds of the trailer hitch. I have seen it a lot on new pickups still on the lot. My solution for this is to wire brush the rust on the weld, spray a rust inhibitor on the welds and then give it a quick shot of semi gloss enamel. Pretty sure your dealer will do the same if you show it to them.

+1

I'd much rather they don't do any replacing and just remove the rust and coat. Too many things can go wrong with a replacement like that. If you use the hitch at all, the receiver will eventually develop rust too.

It might be faster for you to due it your self. A bit of sand paper and good rustolem protection paint. You can even do clear.

Thanks all... that's what I was thinking as well. Just wanted to check in.... think I'll just take care of it myself. Dealer might fix it .. but for everything they "fix", I find another 2 things they damaged/broke.

Yes it's very common for tow hook to rust, especially in our Canadian winter + coastal humidity weather mix. All my previous cars had this problem - Toyota Highlander, then Acura MDX. I normally claim it to the dealer and they do some touch ups which fixes it for couple months, then problem returns. I just checked my 2019 X5 which I had since last summer and survived the same rough winter that my other cars did. So far surprisingly not a drop of rust. Only thing I did different with this car - I sprayed it once with WD40 sometime around fall, perhaps it helped. Anyway now I'm going to do it again for the next winter

Spray with a little WD40 (exact what AustinV said), wait 10 minutes then it should just wipe away. Also good for preventing.

If that doesn't work, use a fine metal brush and then some flat black paint and its gone.

Its very common for tow hitches to rust, especially around joints/corners or where rubbing has occurred to expose bare metal. As long as its only surface and hasn't penetrated into the metal, its not a problem.

I have the stealth/removable tow-hitch, which has a hidden coupling under the rear bar. This has a plastic filler-module that fits into the coupling when the tow-hitch is not in, stops water getting in and rusting the coupling.

Another advantage of hidden/removable tow hitches, less wear and tear on the tow hitch.
