Just for curiosity reasons let me point out two questions that have come up:
a) First of all: Thanks to TurtleBoy for starting this thread. However, the data shows 76 50e owners reporting issues/non-issues during the last three months. That is how many pro-Mille of all 50es built? b) Interestingly the problems with the 50e do not seem to appear (in a relevant amount) in 50es built for Germany. Any ideas why that would be (I don’t know about other countries)?! |

Did you take it to the dealer to determine the underlying cause of the CEL?

I don't think you see a lot of folks from Germany sitting on this forum.

b) I have thought about that before as I noticed what appears to less problems with European vehicles. Never came up with anything concrete but a few ideas were less European members, possible differences in culture in regards to answering surveys, different electrical systems, different battery capacity and possibly difference in refrigerant being used.

Are there a significant number of 50e’s being exported to Germany compared to a B47, B48, or B57 engine varriant?

change of status
Since my original post when I had had no real problem I have had two issues develop: first with the fuel door not opening all the time which turns out to be a major repair apparently (taking it in for this in three weeks) and then today drivetrain malfunction, driving not possible showed up for first time. I shut car off and on, then a smaller notice showed up on left screen (non-touch part) about the same thing but I was able to start the car and drive home 50 miles without incident. Turned car on and off several times after home, no more warnings. I will tell dealer when I take it in for fuel-door mechanism repair.
By the way, the green pull cord to override the fuel door not opening doesn't work either. Had to wait 15 minutes at my last refuel after hitting the vent button countless times before it would finally open..... you should all check that in your vehicles to make sure it works. |

Same issue here in the UK. Mine is 6 months old with approx 5000 on the clock.
My advice is don't ignore the warning if it clears on your car. Chances are, there will be an underlying issue. Not worth the risk. Dealership has had the car for nearly 3 weeks now. The car has had the software update and they've performed extensive road tests as instructed by BMW in Germany. Now saying they are going to replace the SME Module. Needs to be ordered. They've supplied me a loaner and that's fair enough. Does appear some sort of recall is required unless they come out and say a certain batch of modules are faulty. |

Update**
I got a check engine light on my dash this week and will be going to the dealership to get them to look at it. I hope this one is a simple issue to fix. Fingers crossed.... |

Adding another data point:
Joined after purchasing a 2024 X5 50e. CEL come up after a month (~500miles) and the service dept just cleared it and claimed it's software issue. No issue since then. Just recently, after about 4month and total ~1,900miles on the car, the CEL come again and along with some warning message related to high-voltage system. Brought to dealer and was informed SME needs to be replaced. They did manage to get a part from another dealer in US after a week, but the new part was found to be defective, and I'm now waiting for them to give me an estimate on how long it's going to take. Seriously considering returning/lemon the car if any issue happens again after this. |

New user here!
I’ve come across this as I’ve been looking to order a 50e. Dealer has told me that there is currently an 11/12 month wait on new ones. I had just put a deposit down on a used 50e from dealer from early 2023 but reading this makes me think it’s potentially a bad idea. They also have a mandatory recall on them in the UK to do with the intergrated breaking system, which I’ve seen on this forum too. They’re unable to release the car or even allow a test drive on it till this issue is fixed. I’m fairly new to ordering a new car so my question is, is 12 months a long time or is this pretty standard? Could this be due to the fact they have paused production whilst trying to get to the bottom of this? I had originally decided to go with BMW as I’d assumed it would be a fairly reliable car but reading this forum makes me think I should give the 50e a pass for at least a while. Too many red flags. It does look like a great car though. If I go ahead are there any tips to try an minimize the damage from This issue? |

No, not since the 3/8 data. We have had very few responses since then that would have fit into the inclusion category and a couple that originally were fine but then developed problems.
From my point of view we got the data I was hoping to get concerning % with issues. As a bonus I think anecdotally we have seen, what most have suspected, in that the issues are not tied with any specific build date/period and seem to be ongoing. My initial thought was I would leave this one as is and then in late summer revisit having a poll for the MY25's to see if there is a difference. I'm actually hoping we won't need a poll as we will not see people reporting issues.

On Weds night, I got a notification for an update and promptly started the process. The update was fast on the phone App (Android MyBMW) as it took about 1-2hrs, but it took a long while for the update to be done in the car as it stopped at 65% on Weds and continued on Thurs to 88%. I decided not to take the SAV to the Dealership till the update is done, and since Fri is a Statutory Holiday, I was looking at Sat to get to Dealership. Fortunately, the update was done while we were driving around on Friday morning but the CEL was still present. It went off for a while and came back. I drove around a bit with many stop/go situation, and I noticed it wasn't showing up again. I was busy throughout Saturday, and I did little driving but it never came up again on Sat. I cancelled my visit to Dealership as I've read on the forum that updates do correct some system errors. I guess I just didn't want them to poke their fingers into my otherwise unproblematic machine. Everything was good on Sun morning and afternoon and I took a trip outside the city limits to a friend's acreage. The road was a bit free so I was speeding up to 130Km/hr when a chiming sound alerted me to the error on my screen. "Oil level above Maximum". It also said I can drive it but I shouldn't speed around a bend. What?? I slowed down to 100km/hr and managed to take get it home safely. It was the first message that comes up whenever I started the car, so no running away from this one. Early yesterday, I called the Dealership that I was coming in and they fixed afternoon appointment for me. I took the car for a few groceries shopping at Costco and dropped some stuff with a friend on the way to the dealership. I also filled up my tank for the first time since I got the car since Sept 2023 ( I have been driving about 4000km mostly on electric/Hybrid Pro), and by the time I got to the dealership in the afternoon, the error has disappeared. The front desk guys collected my key FOB and scanned it. They saw the oil error but they couldn't locate the earlier one. The guy at the desk told me the technicians are mostly done for the day (10mins left) and they may look at my car the next day, but he suggested he could reduce the oil level himself if I don't mind. I told him I would prefer the technicians do a thorough job and I don't mind coming another time. I drove my SAV home and planning to visit them again this week. For a change wanted to provide a positive update:
Car was in the shop today for the first time for a planned oil change. Had mainly software glitches and they updated me to 03/2024.35. I had during my 11,500 miles on different occasions High Voltage and a Drive Drain red alert. Parked the car and in both cases after a few hours of deep sleep they went away. Roadside assistance remote diagnosed and couldn’t find any persistent codes and assumed software glitches. Today during the diagnosis they didn’t find anything. So far 7 months and 11.5k miles and first time in the shop with update of iDrive is fairly good compared to what others unfortunately have experienced. And as most agree it’s a wonderful ride. |

Today I got an orange wrench in the instrument cluster. And messages about High Voltage and Drivetrain. The message also says driving possible control of high voltage system and drivetrain necessary to prevent damage.
I don't think this is the CEL issue? But after restarting the car the orange wrench and messages were gone. So do I have a problem or was it a software gremlin? |
