Works on magnets... Not radiating anything. Exact same concept as convection cook tops. You should be more worried about wifi and cell towers.

My observations:
FYI, I don't have temperate cup holder which means the wireless pad is in portrait orientation and slightly angled upwards towards the front.

When my iPhone X is in the wireless charger, it slides down to the base of the pad. The light comes on and the phone begins to "charge". 30-ish minutes later and the phone shuts down due to overheating. However, if I place the phone on the pad upside down (face up still, just the ear piece is at the bottom) the phone charges very slowly but doesn't get as hot.

Also, my display key rarely charges on the pad. It too just overheats. I think this is due to the fact that the coil is positioned centrally on the pad and due to the incline, the devices slide to the bottom and are therefore not properly aligned.

I recently got an iPhone 8+ from work (they must have gotten it from a museum) and due to its obnoxiously large size, it seems to charge absolutely fine. No issues with it at all so far.

Seems to me like it's just a positioning issue however, unlike a wireless charging pad you'd have at home, if it's not properly lined up, it shuts off, the one in the car keeps trying to charge regardless and causes overheating.

No cases on either phone or key tested.
It's meant to be a convenience factor, for me it's just a PITA.

I have an iphone xs and it gets really hot. The phone becomes unresponsive after about 30 minutes in the wireless charger. As described by others, it slides down, covering the (horrible placed) led. I don’t have a cover/case on my iphone. I’ve reported this issue to the dealer. The wireless charger design seems like a failure in current form/state. Hopefully they come up with a renewed design for it.

Same issue here. iPhone X becoming warm and hardly any charging. I don't have the heathed cup holders. Charging tray upright on the left. And the charging indicator led is invisible from the driver side. Difficult to get the phone in and out.

I don't use it any more. I have a usb c cable in the middle console. Works much faster.

I had wireless charging in my 6GT. Worked really well. Charged fast. It gave a bling sound when the phone started charging. Easy to install the phone. So they know how to do it but I guess they missed it in this case.

Angry 2019 X5 over heats my Iphone XS+ till it stalls!!

I have the same issue. I reported this to BMW and they acknowledge there is an issue. But they label it as a "characteristic" of the wireless charger. I have taken the car to BMW multiple times but it doesn't even cover for lemon law since they refuse to fix it.

I am tired with BMW since you pay so much and things are not working!!!!

They are blaming the phone, but newer BMW's are only compatible with apple phones which don't make any sense. As for apple it should be kept under 113'. But BMW it self says it rises to 114'.

Does it take a death for BMW to fix the issue?

I have tested the phone with 2 other wireless charges with no issues. The phones been replaced! iOS has been re stalled on both. Done my share of troubleshooting!

I have a Google Pixel 3 android phone, no case, and it gets super hot to point of shutdown and charge does not increase at all. I only charge it wirelessly at home/office on a Google Pixel stand and it works fine there.

I think its a coil positioning thing as many here surmised - BMW had to make a best guess for optional coil positioning and they seem to have picked the geometric middle and with so many different phone form factors in existence, you are never going to get a perfect induction coupling that will work for all phones... Maybe time to spin up the old 3d printer and make a small cutout tray to help position my pixel optimally!

Android Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and it charges fine in either its Seido case or Otterbox Defender - both rugged cases - without getting any warmer than it does on my wireless charger at home (barely warm). MY 2020 G05.

@3284me and radmjk do you have the iphone 11 in a case? Do you put in a specific corner/side of the charger?

I do have it in a thin tech21 case. I don't put it anywhere particular, I just plop it down.

I have mine in a clear otterbox case. I also just plop it in, but sometimes I push it back to see the charging light. I have the heated and cooled cup holders so its placed horizontally in the charger.

I have a 2020 330i that I took delivery of in October 2019. I also have a iPhone XS Max with a leather case. I've been following this thread since I got the car because I noticed that my iPhone would get extremely hot when wirelessly charging. However, I just remembered that I haven't had that issue in quite awhile, even though I'm still using the same phone with the same case. I'm wondering if my iDrive 7 software update in late November (went from 07/2019 to 11/2019 software) and/or an iOS update fixed things. Who knows, but yes my situation went from having a hot iPhone daily in that charger to not having one.

hmm, apple recently released iOS 13.4; that released fixed the issue with not being able to pick songs using the steering wheel selector if the playlist was around 75 songs. Maybe I'll try the charging pad again and see what happens but even if it does charge, it still wears out your battery a lot faster than charging over wire.

the USB port in the center console armrest is surprisingly fast. I just have a usb-c to lightning cable in there, and whenever my phone is low I leave it in there to charge. I'm used to it from having it in my F15.

Same issue here. Picked up the car yesterday and my Iphone X barely charged. It also did not decrease the battery power but got hot. Was just looking for this thread and was wondering if there is something wrong with my wireless charger?

Not really amused about this as this is supposed to be an easy task and standard feature

Every calculation the iPhone makes requires energy, and some of this energy is wasted in the form of heat. Thus, if you use the iPhone extensively while charging it, you run the risk of making it even hotter than it would have been otherwise and pushing it toward a critical temperature.

I never noticed my iPhone XS getting hot while using it, albeit I never left it on there for more than 30 mins so far. I usually have google maps and Apple Music (downloaded music only) running in the background.

My car’s charging pad is orientated horizontally because I have heated and cooled cup holders. I wonder if there is a difference in phone heating based on the charging configurations. Assuming that is the case, maybe the horizontal one is less prone to misalignment or, as someone else in this thread previously mentioned, there’s just more venting in the area.

Conversely, I know my phone will get hot even while not charging depending on what apps are being used. I know Waze is notorious for heating up my phone and why I stopped using it. Also, streaming music is equally as bad, assuming the music isn’t already downloaded.

Maybe it’s a matter of the natural latent heat generation due to induction charging coupled with very high app/GPS usage that is triggering thermal shutdowns. Maybe try charging with reduced background apps, turning one or more off in a controlled manner and see if the performance changes.

I've solved the heating issue with my Iphone Xs. Without cover, it became very hot within 30 minutes and after about 40 minutes it rebooted because of excessive heat. This issue is related to the camera which is preventing the phone to make leveled/flat contact with the wireless charger. I've found a cover with a small round metal plate in it, which will greatly enhance the induction contact. Also, because of this cover, it levels the phone because the camera falls within the cover. I've just driven for about 1 hour, and the phone does not get hot anymore while charging.

That is the bad news, I bought it more than half a year ago on Alieexpress and it is no longer listed on their site. But there must be more phone covers with a metal plate in it. It's mostly used for magnetic carmounts.
