BigCactus, can you comment on how well they work? Any unreasonable wind noise? And can you provide a Thule part number?

Just heard back from Thule after inquiring again. This is what they're recommending:

"Hi Sir ,

Yes do do have a system :

Options

I attached the OEM cross bars this weekend along with 2 RockyMounts TieRod bike racks. The setup looks great IMO.

When I put mine on I laughed a little at the 800 page manual... the Germans were VERY specific to the mm where to place the bars.

Yeah the manual was ridiculous. It took me over an hour to do a 10 minute task

I just received my OEM one today and tried. However, the wind noise is so loud. Do you also feel the loud wind noise? If you have any tips to reduce the wind noise of the OEM one (like position or some tricks), can you please share with us? The wind noise is really annoying. Thanks.

Wind noise is terrible with them, but has been the only option until now. I'm going to order the Thule and give that a go.

I have some wind noise. Not sure I'd call it terrible but it's noticeable if the stereo is not playing. I don't notice when the stereo is on.

Sorry for the delay. I ended up using this 3M tape and cut it into about 2.5 inch width lengths and ran it along the bottom of each aerobar. That eradicated the whistling noise. See pictures below.

What did you add to the cross bar; it didn't come through on the post.

Where did you buy it.

Wind noise is an issue for me.
Thanks

Part Number?

Could you please post the part number for the crossbars? I have older OEM racks from E70 but while the rear one may fit the front one is too narrow, like more than an inch. To add to confusion, literally yesterday BMWUSA listed identical part numbers for both E70 and G05 base racks, and today the page for G05 changed but now it shows the mount into the rail holes, not roof rails themselves, and I do have the rails. I am also not sure if it makes a difference, my G05 is an m-sport setup, so do they have different roof rails?

Also, on the noise, yes, I also had considerable noise on those racks when on E70, but hopefully the 3M Tape solution listed above can also work on OEM racks. Thanks!

I wanted to update this thread. My base rack install was causing an annoying whistle at around 65 - 70 mph. It was really loud and high pitched. So after some research I decided to try out the Thule Airscreen Fairing. This is not an exact fit for the BMW base rack so some Macgyvering was required.

Here is what I ended up using for materials:

1) 44 inch Thule Airscreen - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2) SAE Size 36 stainless steel hose clamps - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3) 1/8 inch thick roll of rubber - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Instructions:

1) Cut 4 10-inch strips from the roll of rubber
2) Trim each strip from 1 inch wide to about 3/4 inch wide
3) Remove the stickers from 4 of the hose clamps and completely unscrew each
4) Remove the base rack from the X5
5) Loosely assemble the Thule Fairing to the base rack to get the spacing correct
6) Wrap a rubber strip around one of the Thule Fairing Plastic clamps
7) Wrap a hose clamp around the rubber and tighten (this took some effort)
8) Complete the rubber strip/hose clamp procedure for all 4 of the Thule Fairing Plastic clamps
9) Assemble the base rack back onto the X5
10) In my case, assemble the RockyMount TieRod bike racks to the base rack

I haven't had time for extensive testing yet, but in 2 short trips the whistling has been completely eliminated. Also, the wind noise has been reduced by probably 50%. It's still there unfortunately but is much more tolerable. I will report back if things change.

Has anyone installed the 7603 system on their G05? I'm wondering if it interferes with the sunroof. Not that I would want to open it with a carrier on the roof, but just in case someone hits the button. Thanks!

All, which roof rack base system is the quietest (least wind noise) between BMW OEM, Thule, and Yakima?

I had the BMW base system on my older model X6 and the wind noise was brutal. Seeing as I paid for the upgraded sound system and double-thick glass on my new X5, I'd like noise at highway speed to be limited, especially when I'm not carrying skis and only the rack is installed.

has anyone tried Thule Wingbar Evo 135 as far as wind noise? This is what Thule recommends when I select X5'19 on their website.

After a not so great experience with a Yakima setup, I just finished installing the Thule Aeroblade, with the Kuat Grip 6 ski attachment using a direct mount setup. This is the lowest profile, and sleekest looking setup I have seen, and I love it! No road noise to report either. From room to the top of the Kuat Grip 6 it measures 7.5". My previous attempt with the Yakima bars and Evo 6 ski attachement measured at 9.5". Oddly those 2" make a world of difference.

Still trying to post pics...keep getting an "invalid image error".

I appreciate you sharing your “Macgyvering” experiment and sorry it didn’t quite live up to your expectations. I have to say, I could see this on a Subaru Outback, but I really don’t like it on a refined vehicle like the G05. I think BMW really blew it on this and the rear trailer hitch body color fascia.

Even my 4Runner has a dead quiet and more elegant solution for the cross bars and rack system:

I had ordered my X5 with the rack, but cancelling now. I'll wait to see if a better and quieter solution emerges. For those with air suspension and wanting bulk storage like a rocket box, I think a receiver hitch cargo box would be a decent option.

I have the OEM bars on my X5 and noticed a bit of whistling when they were mounted where the manual recommended.. which was 460mm from front and 700mm in between (for the F15 X5). When I moved them back about 100mm the whistling sound almost completely went away.
