Negoatiating buying price towards the end of the lease for X5 40i

Has anyone successfully negotiated lease end buying price?
I have seen lot of tips on negotiating maximum discount on MSRP before signing the lease. Residual value is already set at the time you get the lease but once 3 year lease is over and if I like the car can I negotiate the lower price than what was set at the beginning of lease?
Of course it depends on the Market at that time but has anyone successfully bought the car on lower price? Any tips?

Yes. Absolutely negotiable at that time.

If I remember correctly from some posts that I read, BMW Financial made some type of change to the rules and dealers are no longer allowed to negotiate the price for a purchase at lease end. It doesn't really seem to make sense to me and perhaps I'm mistaken and some others will chime in.

You are correct. BMW FS just recently implemented a new policy that the payoff (while the lease is still active) is not negotiable and that the residual value (at lease end) is also not negotiable. They've also taken away dealerships' ability to resell the car to you for a lower amount. But there is a slight loophole. The dealer is free to sell the car to whoever they want, so what we were able to do just recently with a family member's 3 series at lease end is negotiate a lower buyout price with the dealer and buy the car from them, but under someone else name with a different address. By doing that, the dealer is avoiding getting backlash from BMW FS and you ultimately end up buying your car for a lower price than the residual amount.

Just went through it and the above comments are spot on. Not negotiable.
