Coolant temp. Unstable
So I have a 2011 msport 335d that I bought brand new.
142000km still under Extended Warranty I have a Electronic performance steering wheel which I can see my coolant temperature Since I bought the car new, winter or summer temp as always been 86 Lately I'm having problems, temp is fluctuating between 79 and 99 When I drive on highway it's stays between 81-90 If I come to a stop and let the car idle, temp reach 99 No check engine Over 90 usually I could hear the rad fans! Now I don't ! I opened the hood to see at 97 and they won't start at all, in fact they don't come on anymore ( fan) I know it should be the thermostat but the dealer told me that it's not covered since there is no check engine! It's about 10 degree Celcius now outside Will they wait until I fry my engine ? Dealer even charged me 80$ for diagnostic What can I do? I have the platinum extended warranty in Canada I took videos I have a second appointment on Monday to show them. |

Is your AC on during these temp fluctuations? My car runs a stable 166*F (EGR blocked) when the AC is running, but it steadily grows to 190*F+ without it. The AC kicks on the radiator fan.

I just had the same exact issue on my D. I noticed the ac compressor was turning on and off. From past experience an indication that the cooling fan might not be working properly. Took it to the dealer and sure enough it turns out that the radiator cooling fan was dead and had to be replaced. Fairly quick fix @ but def suggest you have it checked as these engines need their proper cooling.

On the freeway the temp should stay constant.
In traffic it can vary as there is not a lot of air circulating through the radiator. The coolant temps on my car have fluctuated from 186.8 - 206F depending on the traffic condition and regeneration, ever since I started to monitor the engine parameters a few ears ago and some 50k miles. |

If your fan isn't coming on with the A/C, then something is wrong. I would start with that, as the high temps (99C) you're seeing can definitely happen if you're going slow/stopped and the fan doesn't activate, even if the outside air temp is very very cold.
