Tesla announces P90D

This is ridiculous, Tesla announces P90D, 0-60 in 2.8s, 1/4 miles in 10.9.

It's 13k more than the P85D. Not sure if upgrade is available for current P85D owners.

The numbers are getting crazy... I think it's said that this is about as fast as it will be since now it's being limited by traction instead of internal electronics/mechanics.

@TeslaMotors: Ludicrous Mode. Model S just got faster and is now the fastest-accelerating car on the road: 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. http://t.co/65blztPLBS

@TeslaMotors: 90kWh Battery. Your road trip just got longer. New extended range option will give you 5% more range. http://t.co/65blztPLBS

These numbers are soo ridiculous... for a 5000 lb car to pretty much match the 1/4 time of say 458 Speciale... of course, off the line the Tesla would be much faster... Probably would get dizzy...

Alright, need to work hard, save money, invest smarter, etc... hopefully by the time I get my next car, I can have a crazy fast electric car.

After 3 pulls, it'll have the acceleration of a Toyota Yaris. This is a card trick...nothing more.

Not ridiculous. there is almost no limit to what an electric motor can put out, at least not at these low powers. A normal car can easily house a 2MW electric motor, so that's about 4 times as much power as this car puts out now.
The trick is to power it continously. The stamina is wat normal batteries still can't provide. That is where the engineering challenges lie.

Finally, Musk touched on a future second-generation Roadster model,
This is much more interesting imho, because this car must be able to handle and to have the stamina, otherwise it's useless as a fun car.

No sense in square setup. The car will never complete a single lap on a track.

Keep in mind that traction is probably an issue due to necessitating a lower rolling resistance tire. This is how EV's and Hybrids get their mileage.

rofl yep, also whats next superridiculous mode? I find Tesla's duality annoying, on the one hand they claim they are not making a sports car, then keep posting 0-60 and quarter miles in there conferences. Stay classy like the rolls royce in response to power figures for its cars, that its power is "adequate" .

They also claim to have the fastest accelerating sedan.....but funny how I don't see advertising info on the truth that it may or may not be able to be repeated on back to back runs , or how it will go into limp mode and overheat after a few pulls.
Pretentious selective advertising and lying by ommison at its best

Who cares what it can do around a racetrack?

If you can afford a 100k+ sedan, you should be able to easily afford a dedicated track car...something far more suited to track use than a 5000lb family sedan.

This is a fast street car. In STREET CAR USE, it's pretty hard to touch in most production STREET CAR scenarios. It's a crappy track car. I drive a 335...another crappy track car, yet it is still a fun street car (when modded).

Tesla could also be said to be a good drag car, especially a 1/8th mile car. 0-60 is for magazine racers. Give me 60' time, 1/8 and 1/4 mile times and trap speeds - they tell a hell of a lot more than some 0-60 time.

No one is confusing this with a track car, but even for a street car, the gimmick marketing mode is only good for three or so runs before it's dead.

Well, its not like its the first manufacturer to forgot to tell the public about other things that will happen.

Like, the GT-R launch control isn't covered under warranty for instance or the P918 turns off the front electric motors at 165 since they didn't add a 2nd gear for them. Just to name a couple I can remember.

OK, dumb question here. If the battery can last for a couple hundred miles, why would the car be "dead" after only 3 strong pulls as a lot of people are saying? Does the car only have so much juice up top, where it then drops to a charge level that the performance drastically declines?

I've just never had much interest in the car itself, so apologies for having no idea wtf people are talking about here hah.

Its not dead per se, it goes in limp mode to save the batteries allowing them time to cool off. If it did not do that, chances are there will be a fire and/or massive degradation of performance for the packs.

A battery is not like gasoline. It can deliver high amps for a short period of time, but then internal resistance climbs up and heating starts. The tesla probably actively limits the current after a certain point. You can already see that with the normal models, they accelerate fast (as they should with 416 bhp) but over 90mph the acceleration drastically drops and is not anymore on par with other cars with that kind of power.

And that is strange as the tesla should accelerate even faster at those speeds compared to a conventional car because at those speeds weight is far less an issue and drag is. And the Tesla has far less drag than similar combustion cars because it has no large open grille to cool a big radiator. (a grille is aerodynamically a large windpocket).

So therefore active current limiting probably takes place as accelerating on those speeds takes a lot of energy (=current) for prolonged amount of time, and the batteries will probably overheat with that, or drastically limit their live.

Tesla needs to find a new gimmick. Most people drive these cars in urban areas, so 0-60 acceleration is of limited use in traffic/cities especially at this level.
