Auto detected speed limit cruise control

I thought I remembered reading in the manual that the camera system can recognize speed limit signs and if you are using cruise control it will offer the option to adjust to the new posted speed limit.

Did I imagine this feature? If not how do you activate it?

Probably not available in the US market would be my guess. I've never seen the option anywhere and it is more than happy to keep me at cruise at 80 in a 65 with no complaints.

EU product at this time. I also read that EU might be trying to make it a law to have vehicles adjust based on sign and make in mandatory.

The X5 does have this feature. I can't remember if there is a setting that I need to turn on, but when on cruise control and the speed limit changes, I got a "SET" icon on my HUD and I can press the SET button on the steering wheel to have the cruise speed adjusted accordingly.

Interesting, I have not seen that pop up while driving with cruise on. (I use cruise to stay out of trouble) , But this is not an auto function correct? You must manually press for it to adjust?

No, you'll need to press the SET button manually to apply the change.

I have never seen that feature documented or commented on by anyone else. Can you link to the docs for us or maybe take a pic of the setup? Thanks.

You arenít referring to the manual speed limiter function are you? That is not attached to the cruise control.

do you have both speed indicators enabled? I turned them off but it reads the signs but will not change the speed based on them

Yeah I have seen this but no adjustment option. I can't remember if I was reading or watching something like Top Gear when they where talking about EU having auto makers auto adjust to keep people from speeding... I doubt that is anywhere near being in affect but was assuming the OP was asking about the auto adjustments.

Audi has the auto adjustments on some of their models and many folks choose not to use it because the braking can be strong when the limit drops and also some false readings causing sudden braking.

I like how it reads the speed limit signs and posts them in the HUD and flashes when there is a change but not sure I would want anything to automatically happen especially if you can't program it to be limit + x mph.

settings > driver assistance > driving > speed assistant > notes on speed limits (set to: adjust manually)

it then brings up a set option on the HUD when the speed limit changes. pressing set will change your max speed when using cruise control.

at least it does for me. i am on version 2018.11.49 Australia.

The manual SET function is available in the US market but Automatic is not - according to the G05 Tech training docs.

ok guys I figured it out last night. I think BMW should've named their settings better because it was an option I didn't expect.

go to display, speed limit assist and set the detect option to manual then it will prompt you with the set button when the speed limit changes.

Awesome, thanks for diving deep on this one. I haven't had the chance yet to play around but seems straight forward.

Good work. As I understand it, this feature only is appealing to those that set their cruise to the exact posted speed limit.
I tend to set my ACC at least 6+mph above the speed limit so not sure the feature will ever help me? I had a similar system with Audi and never found it useful.

You can use it to quickly have the speed limit set then got 5-infinite over but the set text will appear again over the limit in your HUD

the Audi one had a tolerance of +/- 5 or 10mph which was nice because it would auto adjust (no input from you needed) so for work zones that helped instead of hitting your brakes then adjusting back, otherwise I agree

Yep, I miss all of those my Audi features. Interesting to see both German makers but different approaches of using the Cruise Systems.

I guess Audi was smarter "Techwise". They also have Smart City Traffic Lights maneuverability. It would slow down your car to adjust with the upcoming Traffic Lights on your way to save some gas. If the light is about to turn Red, Audi would slow down automatically and vice versa. But that feature works only in Smart Cities like Las Vegas, and Frisco, TX. Probably more are adding up. It probably requires the lights connected to the internet or some traffic jam assisting servers. I wonder how other car makers would implement and use it. Don't know if a software update only would do it or it needs more harware?!

Eh, I prefer BMW's less invasive approach. Traffic light data only worked in a few cities and it was never consistent.

I live in Germany. Here automatic adopt is available for G05. It also adapts pro active to reach speed wenn limit starts.. Braking and accelerating is smooth most of the times.. It uses a combination of nav database and camera but the database needs improvement.. Will do so over time.

Set speed can be preselected by +/- 15 km/h (about 10 mph)

In the Netherlands automatic adopt is not available, it then switches to "set manually" at the border..

Garage List
BMW's approach to the automatic limit is better than Audi's IMO - my Q7 is constantly braking (sometimes hard) when passing an inactive school zone, or misreading an access road by the Interstate (more alarming), or setting the speed for trucks, or just interpreting a hand-lettered work zone speed in some goofy way (80 for 60, for example). You could set it plus or minus over or under, but would much rather have a manual option.

Iíve also observed erroneous reading of speed sign all the time.
