Using the DA Pro "self driving" feature
I didn't see a thread that specifically discussed how well the self driving feature works, a place to compare experiences.
I've tried it a couple of times and was disappointed, at least at highway speeds. It just wanders in the lane too much. Even on a straight road, clear weather, light traffic, it can't help but drift from side to side. It stays within the lines of course, but if I was driving behind someone with this behavior, I'd suspect some kind of impairment. My wife half joked that it was making her seasick. I don't have enough experience with it in rush hour traffic to comment on that aspect yet. |

I find it works really well in rush hour traffic, love it in stop and go! I do agree at highway speed it drives like a kid learning to drive, way too much steering, seems to steer too much and then need to correct, like when you learned to drive and you didn't look far enough down the road. I do find it varies a bit road to road on how much it does it.

The only true DA pro additional feature you can use so far is the handsfree traffic mode which size different than lane keep assist

We have had the exact opposite experience with ours. Using both the cruise with steering/lane control and the hands-free Assisted Driving Plus it keeps the car fairly well centered in the lane with no real pingpong whatsoever. Everyone that has driven in the car has commented on how well the driving assistance works and that they would have never realized the vehicle was doing the steering and not me. I regularly use it at speeds over 80mph and it does an amazing job. The lane change assistant also does a good job of changing lanes by itself.
Could be a difference in cameras, software or settings. When was yours built, what version of iDrive software do you have and what is your setting for the lane keeping assist. Mine was a Jan build, I have .53 and set to medium. |

This can all be fixed with software. My Tesla used to meander within the lane as well, not as much on roads with well defined lane lines. After a software update a couple of years ago, it's been so much better. I'm sure BMW will continue to improve the things that can be improved with software updates.

Mine was built in February, has version .57 (11/2018) and LKA is set to medium.
Tell me more about the lane changing by itself feature. I've not experienced that. |

I do have to ask to be complete since I saw an instance where it was the case, you are engaging the cruise with steering/lane control and not just relying on the lane keeping, right? Here is the info on the lane change from the manual: |

Tested it for the first time today, it works brilliantly. The car doesn't bounce of lanes, it sits perfectly in the middle.
It sort of moves a bit but it corrects itself, just be ready to take control when needed. |

I did a more thorough test this morning, stop and go, followed by open freeway with a lot of turns.
The stop and go portion, because its so slow, didn't bounce from side to side, at least not so I could notice. However, on four occasions when another car pulled in front of me (at slow speed) the X5 didn't seem to notice and and made no attempt to stop or even slow down. I had to brake to avoid a collision. On the last event the other car was wedging itself in front of me as we traveled about 2mph. I let it go as long as I dared to see if it stopped on its own, no luck. I had to hit the brake. Also, at slower speeds (below 30?) I kept getting this warning message about some requirements for a driving mode weren't being met, then it would go away. Looking at the manual just now, I'm guessing this must have been for Assisted Driving Plus that it thought I was trying to use (and I guess I was), though I never saw any green lights on the steering wheel and I never saw the "traffic jam" indicator anywhere, yet I believe all the system requirements were met (page 232 in the manual). Later, in the freeway driving part of the test (north on I280, up the peninsula, for those familiar with the area), the straight line tracking didn't seem to wander as quite badly as before, but the turns were not smooth at all. The road would curve, the X5 would turn to follow, then kind of back off, turn some more, back off, etc. for the whole turn. It was as if it could only see like 10 feet ahead and made its steering decisions 10 feet at a time. Like trying to draw a curve with a bunch of short straight lines. I noticed it tended to be closer to the outside of the curve most of the time, not in the middle. The scary part was when there was a transition from one curve direction to another. It didn't react quickly enough and drifted much too close to the outside as the new curve started, so much so that I was afraid it was going to drift into the other lane. On one occasion there was a car in that lane and I had to take over the steering as I was sure I'd hit it. On the return trip it was pretty much the same and straight line tracking was poor once again, but at least traffic was pretty light. So again, not too impressed. Something broken? Pilot error? |

If a vehicle moves into the lane it brakes under all circumstances. The G05 with DAP that I test drove was faultless, self-driving on very poorly marked road conditions. I suspect you have a fault. |

Mine swerves around like a drunken sailor and is terrifying if you don’t keep your hands working against it. It veers toward center dividers and goes into other lanes and bounces between lines like a staggering drunk. It’s awful.
