Acoustic Glass
Hello folks, I just received my '20 X5 M Sport. When I ordered it, I specified acoustic glass. Is there any way tell if I actually got it? The glass doesn't look any different than the one I test drove without it. Thanks for any help!

Roll down the window, if you look at the edge, you should see that acoustic glass is a sandwich construction. At least that's the way it is on the X7s

To see what the actual marking looks like, search this forum because this top came up a few months ago and someone uploaded a pic of theirs but it might look somewhat similar to this pic. .. . |

It probably will not be marked with the words acoustic as we have not had anyone reporting that. Above the circle with the E number in it should be a Roman numeral which indicates it is acoustic glass. Mine has X1 which is acoustic.

On my 2020 m50i.
Windshield - Fuyao with V symbol All four motorized side windows - Fuyao with XI symbol Fixed windows in rear doors - Saint Gobain with V-XI symbol Real fixed windows - Saint Gobain with V symbol Hatch window - Fuyao with V symbol Does this mean that all windows are acoustic? This would explain the price jump in 2020 if true. |

An acoustic windshield should be standard and according to the information Marty in Bgm got from BMW, only the four door windows that move will be acoustic when taking that option. Since your other windows have the same symbol as the windshield you would think those are acoustic also. It could be that was the reason the option price went up. When I have some time (unless someone beats me to it) I will check and see what symbols, if any, are on my fixed and rear windows.

Are you sure your windshield has a V on it and not a 11 or II or //? Mine is a Fuyao and it has the //. My fixed windows and hatch are the same as yours.

Looks like the V designates that the window is tinted, at least according to these code definitions. So it looks like the info Marty got was incorrect and the fixed windows in the rear door are acoustic or at least double glass.
I - strengthened windshield, II - standard multilayered windshield, III – worked-out multilayered windshield, IV – plastic glass, V - other (not windshield) glass with light transmission coefficient low than 70 %, V-VI - double glass with light transmission coefficient low 70 %, absence of index - glass light transmission coefficient not low than 70 %. http://elsie.ua/eng/mark.html |

If you run your finger on the top edge you will feel the gap where the two pieces of glass meet. It is very noticeable by touch. My side windows (except for the cargo area) have the XI markings, which is also a way to confirm if you have the Acoustic option.

You're right. My windshield has the II. Further, if you look at where the windshield meets the roof you can clearly see the edge, and it is double paned glass. I think it is almost certain that the rear door fixed window panes are acoustic. The jury is still out on the rear fixed side windows and hatch. I am thinking those aren't acoustic.

It is hard to say. The only way to know for sure is to find two otherwise identical cars and drive them over the same pavement with a db meter. All I can tell you is that my 2020 m50 with acoustic glass is very quiet.

I have had loaners without the acoustic glass and both my wife and I think there is a noticeable difference between the two. For me it is an option I will get again so it is worth it, to others they may not feel it is because the X5 without it is pretty quiet without it.

To appreciate benefit of acoustic windows you would not want to open sun roof.
For me, sunroof is open most of the time. So having acoustic windows make no practical sense. |

I have acoustic glass and the car is really quiet, like others said, unless you can drive cars back to back and use a db meter to measure it, it will always be a subjective thing, but, very happy with it on ours.

Speaking of a db meter, has anyone done that? Would be interested to know the db diff $600 buys you. Would have to be an apples to apples comparison though. Meaning same tires/wheels, same test driving route, all windows/sunroof closed, same engine, same settings for engine (eco or whatever), etc. Probably too much to ask, eh?

Relative comparisons by C&D for a variety of cars. Unfortunately didn't include the X5, but X7 cabin should be similar with acoustic glass (which it had).

This looks like an option worth getting, as opposed to those gimmicks BMW puts in like the gesture control.

So I looked at some non-acoustic glass cars today and the fixed windows in rear door had the V marking. As such, the 2020s definitely have acoustic glass on windshield plus the six windows in the doors.
Now the only mystery to solve is whether the 2019s had acoustic in the fixed rear doors windows, and if not, that explains (some) of the price increase.
