M50d or 40i G05 Uk

Hi guys,

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are; torn between the 50d and the 40i. Looking at pros and cons, I am getting similar pricing for both, so would like to know thoughts.

I am hesitant to get the 50d due to all the noise about diesels but want to know what everyone thinks of either machine.

I wanted to go for the 50d but like you got cold feet over the diesel fuss, which as we know for BMWs is misplaced, but it is what it is in the UK. So I got boxed into the 40i, but actually I’m really pleased I did as I much prefer it to the 40d I had previously.

I don’t notice any problem with the lower torque of the engine and much prefer the smoother more refined delivery and the sound is much better, especially in Sport Plus!

On and on fuel economy, I only take what the computer tells me and never use EcoPro.... My old 40d did 32mpg most of the time and the 40i now seems to have settled on 24mpg. Not great but not terrible and petrol tends to be a bit cheaper so that helps.

I think it depends on how long you're going to keep it and how long you're going to own it. Short term, I don't think you have too much to worry about diesels on PCP. If it was my forever car, I'd probably go petrol and buy outright.
FWIW, I decided on diesel for the next 4 years after balancing costs, etc. I think the world will look quite different by then though.

I haven't driven the 40i but I can tell you the 50D is a very impressive car, the fact that it's an M makes it even more attractive. In regards to MPG, I get 18.5 - 20.5 mpg in the city, not taken it for a looong motorway ride but I expect to get around 30MPG.

Base m50d is much more expensive than similar equipped 40i.

What discounts are on offer in the U.K. at present? I've had my 3.0d MSPORT 10 months and got 14.8% last April I'm guessing it's around 20% now?

Fully loaded 50d is working out at the same payments due to the interest rate; think about £20 difference compared to a fully loaded 40i

Best I can get is 23% off each vehicle. The difference between each model and total price without discount is around 2k. So hence my dilemma. Might look at the 50d as previously discussed, might be worth the Venture.

I have had the 40i since Sep 19. It will do 31-32mpg at 75mph on the motorway in eco mode but any town driving nukes that due to the effort the engine uses to get the car moving in start stop traffic. My work journey is mostly motorway with town at each end and I average 27.8 using eco on the motorway and adaptive the rest of the time. I cruise on the motorway at 75mph. I bought the petrol blind without driving it but did drive the diesel. I also was put off by all the bad diesel press. What I can tell you is I do not regret my decision. The petrol is buttery smooth, sounds wonderful and if you stick your foot down really shifts. No fuel consumption isn't great but then again it is a 2 tonne suv with all the aero of a house brick! Yet it still hits 60mph nearly as fast as a golf r....incredible machine.

Well I’ve driven the 30d and the 40i.
I have to say i thought the 40i would be much quicker but this didn’t seem to be the case. It lacks the low down torque you get in the 30d plus bmw have managed to get their diesels to sound rather good especially with the m sport exhaust. I went for the 30 d in the end but if you can get the 50d for the same money its a no brainier. 50 d all the way. The sheer low end pull will be phenomenal. Top end good as well and reasonable economy. Forget all the press hype about diesels and go for the 50D. You wont regret it.

On the drive train if detected and likely to have caused failure - yes.

Question is if it's detected

M50d owner here. I picked mine up 3 weeks ago. I absolutely love it. It's the low end torque that makes it feel so powerful. Due to its size it never feels fast so probably don't be getting into a deal if it's a super engaging drive you're after. However, it does sound good in sport. Mostly fake but has the M Sport Exhaust so does sound ok from the outside too.

I'll not say mines "fully loaded" as that gets you into trouble. The options I went for are:
Heated front pack (heated arm rests)
Tech pack (HK, HUD, park assist etc.)
Visibility pack (frickin' laser beams)
Sky lounge (sun roof)
Crafted clarity (clear plastic knobs...)
Privacy glass (still can't believe that's not standard)
Full carbon M Perf Kit.
Drive assistance pack (auto steer, radar cruise)

I do about 100 miles a day. Mix of motorway and A road. Gets good efficiency if you have manners.

Happy to go into detail on the car as a whole or options if you like.

Have you considered the M50i? I have a F85 and I find the V8 petrol gives you the thrill without even pressing the sport/M buttons.

Economy wise its not far off the mpg suggested above for a 40i/M50d. If driving at 75 mph, I will get 29.5 mpg and in town 14.5 mpg.

No M50i in uk

Edit, just checked and they are on sale. This is news to me. When was the M50i released to UK market?

Looking at the 50d as I want 7 seats and not available on the 50i or the the 45e. Not particularly keen on the x7, like the shape of the x5. Ooo, I wonder if that means the residual on the 50d is going to be a lot better as they will become sort after once they kill them off.
