In Europe it’s a thing. The expected behavior is “pendulum”. As in one car from each lane gets to go ahead right at the narrowing. Actually, in US there is no law which says you have to move over sooner either. Perfectly legal to use the lane until it ends. So this behavior is perfectly legal.

I had someone swing out into my lane (which was ending in a few hundred feet) and hit the brakes to block me. I went on the shoulder, passed them, and since my car was a open diff RWD, I hit the gas after and sprayed them with rocks. To say thank you for deciding what I can and cannot do in my lane, and when.

Link to article from Canada, most people still don't understand and get mad / try to block you from merging as you described.

Good article, thanks for posting. Some highlights:

"The system is dangerous, anarchic, slow — and in some of the better-driving parts of the world it’s illegal. In Germany or Austria, refusing entry to a late merger can get you a ticket."

"The zipper merge works by simply having drivers delay their merge until the lane has come to an end. Then, at the precise point of the bottleneck, drivers from each lane take turns entering the gap, like a zipper.

The most obvious benefit is reduced congestion. Cramming into one lane can double the length of a line of traffic and cause unnecessary road blockages to fan out for kilometres behind the bottleneck.

Second, the zipper merge is fair. The simple mantra of “stay in your own lane until the bottleneck” prevents the stress and anarchy of jockeying for position in a single lane. The aforementioned line-cutting BMW, meanwhile, no longer has a clear path to the front of the line.

And, incredibly, the zipper merge might even be faster. A 2004 study by the Virginia Transportation Research Council found that under ideal conditions, the smooth efficiency of the zipper merge results in a faster movement of traffic through the bottleneck."

on top of what was already said, people that have no clue on how to use the
acceleration lane.

I almost rear-ended a lady once, when she slammed the brakes before merging to the highway. acceleration lane was like 1000 feet long in front of her...

I clarified a few posts back. Perfectly fine to use the full length of the ending lane before merging as long as you actually maintain speed and merge safely. It's the people that don't pay attention to the lane ending and then come to almost a complete stop and have to poke their way into the next lane.

Yesterday I had some idiotic lady brake check me because she kept speeding up and slowing down +/-10-15 mph in the left lane and she got mad and was giving me the dirty stare in here rearview mirror because I would get too close every time she would slow down. Me getting close was not because I was intentionally tailgating but because she kept slowing down for no reason. People that fluctuate their speed in the fast lane for no reason other than not being attentive is my annoyance. Once she started giving me the stare, this just showed me how oblivious she was and how her was driving was directly causing her own annoyance and causing her to brake check me.
All I thought to myself was how stupid this person is to drive aggressively and not even realize how they are driving and wanting to blame me for my actions when she was not even aware of her own actions which has a direct relationship to the people driving behind her.

For those of us who live in a condo/apt complex. The person who arrives to pick up someone and honks (sometimes excessive) to signify their arrival. How about this, call them or better yet, turn on your flashers and walk up to the door and knock. I'm sure the exercise is much needed.

It's called the zipper-lane in the US and it drives traffic engineers nuts when drivers get over prematurely.

Yes, there is no end of frustration in reference for the people that DO NOT accelerate in such lane and then wait until they are ON the freeway to THEN accelerate up to the freeway speed.

It usually goes hand in hand with someone that doesn't know how to adjust mirrors for blind spots.

I've been rear ended twice in different cars because people aren't expecting you to stop for other people or something... Once was at a 4 way stop sign with people crossing the road in front of me. The other was when turning right, I had to slow and stop to let people clear the road and wham. In a place where distracted driving is heavily fined, everyone seems to still do it.
I got massive studded tires...on my bike. Not sure if I care anymore if a car pulls out in front of me when I have the right of way. It's the not looking both ways at a stop and not actually stopping where you are supposed to stop.

In many states and cities it's a hefty fine for making illegal U-turn. It's not posted either. They just assumed that you know not to make a U-turn unless there's a sign that allows it. I know because I already got a ticket for such an occasion.

Pretty sure if outlawed it’s got posted signage.

I tried to argue with the Chicago police about this. I told him there was not a sign that said I couldn't make a U-turn. He said it didn't matter. You can't make a U-turn here.
