I'm starting to not buy the "non-enthusiasts don't know what an M5 is".
The car industry has been around for a LONG time, and the world has been immersed in the industry. It's not like there are only 2 brands of cars out there. BMW's been around long enough that people recognize the brand, and associate certain qualities with the company. I doubt anyone with the disposable income for an M5, these days, wouldn't know what an M5 is.

We must not forget that the car enthusiast market is only a small niche.
I think BMW understands perfectly that enthusiasts are going to be extremely picky about their offerings no matter what they produce. Enthusiasts love to modify, upgrade and essentially mold their car to be an extension of themselves. All you need is a solid core to build from. At first I was pissed to see a man in a suit, driving around (at the speed limit, no less) with TV screens mounted to the back seats. Here's the bottom line, though. DONT ORDER THEM. This IS the BMW core customer. It's precisely why (besides a slight savings in weight) the M3 didn't come with a spare. A business man dressed in a suit doesn't get out to change his tire. He calls BMW assist. A car enthusiast, no matter the profession, changes his own tire and/or repairs it with a tool kit. This will be a great car.

My preference is for higher performance cars to show what they can do performance wise on race tracks or private grounds rather than on public roads, because you have to get the message across that exploiting the full potential of these cars is not acceptable on the public streets of the world's cities.
