Camping with an X5

Lol ok Scottish person here living in Alberta 🍁. Love camping but my 8yr old son is thinking we should get a little trailer to tow instead, because dad is crap at tents. Any advice on what to tow? Probably only me and him, maybe there folks at the most. Please give me your real world experiences. Cheers

You can probably just fold down the rear seats and there is plenty of space to sleep inside - at least as much as a 2 person tent.

You can tow up to 7000 lbs so any camper. A few options thinking about how many more years you’ll do this and the type of camping:

- rent a camper and pick it up along the way 50-75$/day
- rent an rv (100-200/day)
- have someone set up a camp site for you (75-150/day depending on tent or rv)
- buy a pop up camper
- buy a full tow camper

We used to go with 8 families and the kids loved it. We pitched tents but we considering renting campers. We did it for 5yrs and now will likely stop. This year we won’t do it given the kids’ ages.

I can't imagine that would be a comfortable experience for two normal-sized humans.

I have camped in with my wife. We are around 5.8-5.9 and 130-145 lbs. It was fine for a night. Like I said, similar space to a 2 person expedition tent, if not more.

I car camp in the X5 when I go to track weekends. I have a small inflatable mattress that fits in the back with the seat down. It works for one person and I suppose two could fit, I just don't know where you'd put your stuff with two people back there.
