Unhappy Celica!?

Yesterday was a beautiful day in southern California so I decided to take a drive in my completely stock 335i coupe down to Redondo Beach. I was driving down Culver Blvd and got stuck @ the light where Jefferson intersects in the middle of the wet lands. So I’m sitting there at the light and I see in my rearview a black Celica rounding the bend fairly quickly, looking like he was trying to catch up to me.

As he pulls up next to me at the light I could hear it was forced induction (turbo? maybe supercharged?). Anyway I looked over and saw a fiberglass hood and some racing rims. I looked around: No cops, clear as a bell out, temp said 68F, road ahead was empty and nice & straight, perfect for a quick little fun run.

The opposing light turns yellow and he starts revving it. It becomes clear his turbo, or whatever he had, was a rather large one. So I gave him a nice big rev to let ‘em know it was on, and then held it @ about 3500 rpm with DTC on.

Light turns green. I dump the clutch and got quite a bit more wheel spin than I was bargaining for. Anyway, DTC kicked in and I was about .5 CL ahead of him by the time I was half way thru 1st gear. He had to shift before me so I gained a little more. Wound it out to 7k and some change before performing what I think was a pretty darned fast shift to 2nd. I experienced some slight wheel spin again, which DTC corrected very quickly. At this point I was still ahead but I could hear this guy’s turbo screaming next to me. It sounded like someone was operating a wet/dry vac in my passenger seat it was so friggin loud! So I shift into 3rd and am still ahead, but just barely. He started pulling and got maybe .25 CL on me before we both stopped since there was a 30mph zone ahead. He slowed down and looked over at me so I gave him the hang loose: as in “that was fun and you car’s pretty fucking fast man!”.
That was it. We were done and now in traffic. I’m sure if I had better tires and turned DTC off; I could have achieved a better launch and could have stayed ahead of him the whole time, but whatever. I ALWAYS leave DTC on while driving around in the city. If I want to race someone THAT seriously I’ll go to the track. Anyway, so I’m thinking about getting a JB2 or something now, lol.

so to sum up what i've learned on this forum in the past 10 minutes: The toyota celica is faster than the bmw 335i which is in turn faster than a bmw m6. So in conclusion a toyota celica is faster now than the m6?

That is a wonderful example of a transitive relation.

I used to have a Celica GT-S before my 325i. They are very very light and quick in stock form. The engine is built by Yokohama, it's a modified version of their race engines for their bikes. The block can handle a decent amount of boost and is been known to rev out to 11k rpm safely. So the engine is no slouch.

Once you boost them, swap some internals, run the comp w/a Apexi tuner, drop in a race clutch/flywheel combo and a LSD and you get a real beast out of them. Maybe a 10k investment in your 20k GT-S and you get a real screamer.

If it was an early to mid 90's body style then it was probably a Celica GT-4. 2.0 turbo/intercooled engine and AWD stock. Only about 200 hp stock but ludicrous hp is only a few thousand bucks in mods away.

And when you get in it, it will still be a Celica...no offense

My buddy has one that he's slowly rebuilding. The fabled Turbo Celica All-Trac. Not many of those on the road anymore.

Agreed, why do you think I let mine go. Fun car indeed but the interior was junk with cheap plastics all over the place.

The engine is built by Yamaha and Toyota, not Yokohama.

That's right. I knew that, just switched them up. I did mention it was a modified version of their sport bike engines.

Celica

My favorite car of all time- I want one really bad....

1983-1985 Toyota Celica GT-S (must be the GT-S)

That car was so incedibly awesome back in the early 80's- still looks good today.
I want one so bad.
You can still find nice convertible GT-S models, but the coupes are all done. I see them on eBay with 190K and beat.
If you know the car I mean, you know the car- awesome rims, had the flares, independent rear suspension, the most incredible sport seats w/ pump bladders...... ugh.

Tell me the honda spanked you in the 325i, because if he beat you in the 335i you need to take off the hand brake next time or something

While we're reminiscing, my first car out of med school was an '86 black Celica GT-S w/ 5 MT. Only stick I ever had. It was a fun car, all 135 horses. Pretty well built, but I do remember having to replace the CV boot several times. I remember considering the Isuzu Impulse--a gorgeous car designed by Guigiaro. OK, back to the present.
