742M Wheel Question

I'm expecting my new X5 M Sport at the end of January and in preparation, I'm trying to figure out the best way to have one set of wheels that I can use year round. I love the 742M, but I'm wondering if I might be able to order four of the front wheel in the 9.5" width, and use them for front and rear, instead of running the staggered setup with 10.5" wide in the back.

When I contacted the parts department, the guy said that the front wheel likely wouldn't fit on the back. I find it hard to believe that the hubs would be different sizes and that this setup wouldn't work, but obviously I'm not sure.

Anyone ever tried this or know whether they would fit? Thank you in advance!

Nevermind, I found a thread that looks like HuskerNSC did this exact thing.

Thanks for the reply! Just trying to debate whether to roll with the 22" or compromise and go with a 21" wheel, but with the same non-staggered setup. I live in NYC, but commute up to CT a lot to see family.

I just went with the Pirelli A/S (Bentley) 22" staggered setup from Tire Rack and will install them after the winter is over. TR is showing the fronts as out of stock but the distribution center in DE does have them in stock. Not sure why the site says they don't but they do.

Thanks njnets21. I appreciate that information. I was looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport all seasons so that I can maintain just one set of wheels for now. And my only option to do that would be with the non-staggered setup. But I think it'll still look and feel pretty good :-)

That was the other way I was considering going because I definitely prefer Michelins. Went staggered but was really on the fence.

Yeah, I would love the staggered setup, but it seems much more practical for right now to be able to rotate my tires and not have to worry about almost no selection of tires for the larger width rear tires.

Dude, I live in jersey, I just put 4 Michelin pilot all season 275 squared with my bicolor 742 22" wheels and it's perfect. I was told at bmw you cannot put the front wheels in the back as they are 9.5, so make sure no one does that, but the squared setup you can rotate the tires and even rock the all seasons all year if you didn't want to keep swapping tires on and off

Others have had success doing the 9.5" rims all around. In fact, when doing the squared 275 tires it seems to generally be recommended you used 9.5 rims all around as well.

Yea if you have 9.5 all around that's ideal, but stock it's 10.5 in the back on my M50i. The tires have a "slightly" stretched look but only if you know what you are looking at in comparison to the front wheels. Most wouldn't notice IMO. I've seen in other threads people really worried about how skinny the back tires look when you don't have 315's but I don't think it's that big of a difference. The squared setup just makes more sense in colder/snow areas.

If you intend to use that set through winter then yea I totally agree. Squared setup is a no brainer then. I almost went that route mostly to be able to use those Michelins because their sidewall is so much nicer looking than the Pirellis. I decided to go with Pirelli All Season staggered with a dedicated 20" winter setup.

Mind sharing any photos of your squared setup?

I'll try and take some better ones tomorrow. So far I've gone 250 miles and no issues, handling differences, etc. haven't been through a snow storm or anything crazy yet but I'm sure they'll perform well

Very nice! The stretch on the rear rims is noticeable but still looks perfectly fine to my eyes. The wider rim is probably giving it a bit of a better stance which likely outweighs the stretch anyway. Looks great riding on those tires and those photos will likely help a lot of people feel better about the squared 22" setup.

I just spent $2068 on the Pirelli All Season (Bentley) tires from Tire Rack. Had I seen these photos a couples weeks ago I may have went with squared Michelins instead. Really wish Michelin would make the 315s.

If it makes you feel any better, the squared setup (275's) we're still $1869 for 4. But the fact I can rotate them down the road i guess is the kicker

22s with Pirelli or Nitto staggered all-season tires. Maybe you can get your hands on all-seasons by the end of the month.

Tire Rack has the Pirelli A/S in stock at their DE distribution center. That's where I just got mine.

Are any of the stock 22 tires sizes from tire rack run flat?

you might have hard time finding rear tires with proper load index if you do a square setup of the 742

I'm purchasing my X5 at lease end and and considering black square 742Ms. This thread (and related posts by members above) are very helpful.

For those going to 742Ms from run-flats, what are you doing for spares? OEM, Modern Spare kits, rolling the dice?
