Anyone have luck (recently) putting together a winter package?

Hi everyone,

I helped my dad purchased a 2020 X5 M50i with 22" non runflat tires about 18 months ago.

At the time he spent his winters in Florida, so the Continental PC6 that it came with were okay. However, I pointed out that if he ended up back in the upper midwest for the winters he'd need to change out the tires.

He recently sold his place in FL and is now back in in the midwest and has to frequently drive to Chicagoland area. I am trying to find him some options and am striking out everywhere.

I'm sure you all are aware how hard it is to get rubber for these staggered 22"s to begin with, but at this time of the year plus supply chain issues it seems nearly impossible.

I decided to try and find a true winter setup for him (ie square 20"s with winter tires) but I'm having a hard time finding something there as well.

Has anyone had recent luck putting something together (OEM, replica, or other) and would you be able to point in the right direction?

Local dealership said that had no options and a list of X5 owners that they were trying to find something for and about half dozen local tire and wheel stores were coming up empty as well. Any help would be appreciated.

You may want to have a look at the Member Classifieds... there are a few folks selling winter setups.

Just spent 30 minutes with my local parts department.

No winter sets available but more on way from Germany. Likely late Jan/Feb.

There is sporadic availability of Pirelli rubber out there (not BMW approved) for the 21/22 rims. I passed as I want a square winter setup.

I was cautioned that if buying even OEM setups second hand to look out for possible rear fitment issues given hub design and offset.

Car came with following offsets:

F-ET42, 10.5 rim W.
R-ET 31, 11.5 rim W.

OEM winter sets for x5MC are:

21/21
295/35/21

Forgot to ask about offset and W.

I'm waiting until summer to get winters for next year. Not going to Frankenstein something. Luckily we have other cars with winter setups.

Can he get away with 20" all-seasons or does he prefer the winter tires? Could be a solution to hold him over until winter tires become available. There are a few sets of 20' rims for sale in the members classified to check out.

Substance-p I saw these wheels in another thread and thought it may be a good solution for you. Looks like they are in stock. I spec’d 20”, but they had 22” also…

I was told by service department the 20" might (wasn't 100 sure) have problematic offsets and thus possible strut/suspension component contact. Something about front/rear hubs being dissimilar for X5MC.

I think the current 21" winter set is the way to go.

Thanks for the suggestion. I reached out to a handful of people. There is one promising option but it is unclear if it would fit.

Thanks for sharing your update. It sounds similar to what my local dealership shared.

I think he could get away with a good set of all season. And, in a 20", they would certainly be better than the 22" summer performance.

Thanks! I'll take a closer look at them.

This is what I can't seem to get clarification on. Some are saying you can go as low as 19" and others are saying you need to stay > 20" to clear the brakes.

No way 19 will fit. 20"s on my f86 looked rather close to front caliper.

I was hoping to get a set of 20" which it seems it seems like a handful of people have posted that it worked on their M50s. And, the 20"s seem to offer more tire options too.

I ordered a square set of 20x9 +30 Forgestar CF10s with 265/45-20 Bridgestone Blizzak DMV2s. The tires are amazing, and the whole set wasn't too expensive (about $3,050 shipped, wheels and tires).

Where did you order them from?

I emailed Forgestar directly, and they set me up with a distributor through which I was able to place an order. Obviously, feel free to select a different model within their line up! I ordered the tires through Tire Rack. 20" is the way to go for winter tires as the selection is much greater than those of 21" and 22".

Also, Forgestar wheels are flow-formed, which is an improvement from cast wheels.

Was referring to OP who is trying to help out his father with a winter set-up on a G05. Father has an M50i. The M50i can come stock with square 20" RF all-seasons. Don't compare your F86 to his G05. G05 has no issues running 20" rims.

Ooooh. Yes sir. Will be sure not to….

Sarcasm aside, 20"s work fine on G05 with M Sport brakes. They are in ours right now.

It is weird that the Tirerack people got back to me with this email for square 20" setup that they offer as -2 sizes option on their website:

Hi,

According to BMW -- and we agree -- you cannot run a square setup on that vehicle.

Thanks.

If you order online, please reference my name and I will keep an eye on the order for you. Thank you.

What should be the minimum offset for 20" rims to clear the msport brakes?

Not sure what the minimum is, but I have 20" OEM 738 rims for my winter setup and they are +35 all around. Fit just fine, so you'd be safe with that number I think.

Like these - https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1883591
