Post DIY: G05 X5 / G07 X7 / G-Series Crystal Volume Control Knob

Parts Needed:
Crystal / Glass Volume control knob.
Can be purchased HERE or HERE

Tools needed:
Cordless drill
1/8in drill bit
Pick set
Microfiber towel

Step 1:
Place Microfiber on center console to catch shavings and prevent accidental scratches

Step 2:
Using 1/8in drill bit, drill a hole in the center of the volume knob. Try not to drill more than 1/4in deep.

Step 3:
Insert hook pick into the hole drilled. Position the handle of the tool so it is downwards and to the left (8 o'clock position). Slowly pull the handle towards the rear of the car. This will pop the tab on that side of the knob. Once you hear the tab pop off, stop pulling.

Step 4:
Remove the pick from the hole and reposition so that the handle is now facing up and to the right (2 o'clock position). Again pull the handle of the tool towards the rear of the car. This will pop the clip on that side of the knob.

Step 5:
Remove volume knob by pulling straight out. This should require no force.

Step 6:
Align new knob and push towards front of the car. The knob will push in easily. Remove protective film.

After:

Feel free to send me a message with any questions. I will be posting more DIY's as I continue to modify my G07.

Well done. I did nearly the same but installed a screw in the drilled hole to pull the knob off.

the silver ring doesn't come off easily on all units (unlike the multiple demo videos out there show). the one on my MY21 45e would not come off, and I ended up damaging it. i then bought a used unit, and the silver ring on that one came off super easily.

This method seems to work on some headunits, but not all. After seeing members damage the silver trim ring, and even accidentally pulling off the whole volume knob, I decided to go with the drill bit route. As long as you don't care about drilling a hole in the factory part, this appears to be the safer and more consistent method.

I was able to use the guitar pick method to swap mine out. Thinner pick worked well, but mangled the pick in the end.
