Not a big surprise that X5 is BMWs top profit item. I would imagine X3 to close behind.

X3 is right on its heels with probably larger sales volume .. and with X3M and X3M Comp and perhaps a CS in two years .. I expect it to be right there to take the baton ...

Isn't that what the law of the free market dictates? The price of anything is what people are willing to pay for it.

Takeaway for me is that Porsche's traditional, but now low volume model contributes to 30% of its margin if I am understanding correctly. Basically also means it probably costs them less than $5k more to make a 911 vs. a 718. Fascinating.

Well, I was actually looking at the 40i vs the M50i. That's where it's 20k.
I do realize the M50 has the M Sport pkg, brakes, ect.
If looking at the 40i compered to the 50i your paying that $14,950 more for just 110hp.
And the additional content still leaves a huge gap between the 2. The math does not make sense to me.

There are basic behavioral economics at play here. A product mix (for nearly anything) is a precise analysis of lift that certain elements give a product. In this case, let's say 4.0 v 5.0 engine (ignore all he other options). One of the best ways to ensure you sell the most of what you want to sell, is put it next to something functionally similar, but of higher price. Want to sell at ton of 4.0s? Place it next to a 5.0. Some will always gravitate to the more expensive 5.0, or maybe an M (just us whackos), but MOST will buy a 4.0. This holds true for all kinds of product. It's fascinating consumer behavior. Read about it in Nobel Econ winner book 'Nudge' by Thaler and Sunstein.

Clearly I replied to the wrong post.

I agree with you on that. I usually wait until the second year at the very least.

The only exception for me was I bought Year One of the 1er , when it originally came out.

You obviously thought you paid a fair price for what you got when you bought your X5. That's all that really matters. The manufacturer's profit margin shouldn't impact your perception of value.

Someone has to pay up for government regulations demanding expensive electric vehicle production.

Quote:
...[Porsche's 911] counterbalances expected losses from the just-released Taycan. Porsche is expected to make 20,000 to 30,000 of the six-figure electric sedan, representing a $6.6 billion investment from the brand, including a new factory near the company's headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.

A super strong possibility.

I need to seriously go drive the X3M.

I'm using the word "law" here as a statement of fact deduced from observation (like the laws of physics); not a system of rules conjured up by government.

Went and sat in one. The new X3 is pretty large actually. I had an X3m30 loaner and felt It might just be too large for me. The X3M looks terrific and I'm sure it's quicker than snot, and probably handles well but its a lot more truckish than I want. After driving the X3m30.. I didn't come away thinking .. if this thing was only wayyyyy faster ... I'd have it.

It's Definitely a mini X5 ... It's a great one vehicle solution type item , better even than the F80 M3 perhaps in that regard.. but the tailgate has a lot higher liftover than I would like and there is a lot of hood.

It would be cool if they made a smaller X3 Sport.

I agree the current X3 is a bit larger then I need for my use.

It's unfortunate that the X1 isn't rear biased xDrive. It looks like a baby X3 to me.
