For me this always seems to happen with a monster truck sized F-350.

I think there must be people that take pleasure in doing this. I was parked out in the far reaches of the parking lot and came back to find a dent in the edge along the back door

Lol. I saw it happen in person the other day.
I'd already seen the driver with poor driving skills in the parking lot before I'd parked. I honestly think they were using my car a reference point for where the next stall was. Elderly driver, beat to hell car. 20+ empty stalls to choose from in the surrounding area.

Occasionally it's another nice car that clearly the owner cares about (not parked 3" away but parked next to you). They've chosen to park in the distant nice car section. Lol. That I don't mind, at least you know you don't have to worry about door dings. (And that's probably partly why they've parked next to you too)

Lol yes. If I'm stuck having to park in a full lot I always try to park next to nice cars that look like the owner cares. Just got the first door ding on our Mercedes after close to 3 years of ownership, not too bad. Time to get rid of it. Lol.

The other day I was in my car and saw someone park next to another vehicle. Opened their door until it was resting (firmly) against the other car, then put all of their weight on their door to hoist themselves up and out of their car, door wedged against and moving up and down on the other car. Painful to watch.

Is there anyone amongst us that doesn't park in the far reaches of every parking lot, burning incense and uttering incantations as we walk to our destination, to prevent being visited by the "god of door dings"??

It is not just other cars that I worry about. I am also scared of people leaving their shopping carts against my car. Lazy a*holes refusing to walk back to return their carts. If I park my car and see someone loading their car, I will stand next to my car and stare at them, till I see them walking back to return the cart. This is especially true if you park in the far reaches of the parking lot. Since it is a longer walk, people find creative ways of just leaving their carts, either resting against your car or with one wheel on the pavement.

Or... You park it out in the north 40 away from everyone and everything. Only to come back and see a freaking shopping cart has banged into your car. My biggest pet peeve! Lazy "A" Holes that won't return the shopping carts where they belong. Instead, they just leave it where they were parked at.

I'm waiting to catch someone doing this so I can rip them a new one!

I would park next to the pillar so that they only hit one side of my car if they really have to.

I park next to an island with grass for that reason. I also get as close to the curb as possible so it gives the brainless wonders more room to swing their doors freely.

I have actually curbed several wheels doing exactly that! Not sure if that's karma telling me to chill or what. Luckily cameras these days make it easier to get even closer lol.

Ouch! The cameras really freak out when you get too close and zoom in on the offending area. It does help a lot.

This was on my '07 X5. Back when 20" wheels were big lol. No 360 cameras, just rear view, and the mirrors didn't go down automatically when backing up I don't think. Ancient times! Lol

Happened to me two days ago with my two week old vehicle.
Parked at remote area at Walmart, already living dangerously. Windy day with wife sitting in car. Returned to find shopping cart leaning against back bumper. Wife confirmed lady sitting in adjoining car (old beater) left cart on sidewalk and wind blew into car. Took picture of license plate as lady drove off.
Fortunately was able to buff out 98% of bumper damage and hopefully can now relax a bit as car has now been christened I to the real world.

two more parking techniques to stay (mostly) dent free:

- parking (my) passenger to (someone's) passenger door, as close as possible. 10cm ~ few inches. No one can open doors and squeeze inside. Cars next to me have to pull out before boarding passengers.
- park my (side of the) car super close to a pillar or wall, in underground parking. This was I'm leaving extra space for anyone parking next to me.
