I may be bias since I've ordered one, but the M50i really is the best bet in this category. I just don't see the case for spending $23,000 more for the X5M. Ride will be rock hard, even on comfort settings, engine has more HP but exactly the same torque at 553 lbs. And all for what 2/10 of a second 0-60? No thanks. Plus you lose fog lights & can't get the beautiful glass controls. And I personally like the 747M wheels much more than the XM5 wheel options. Also discounts are much more limited on full M models, so actual price difference is even greater.

Overall the wifey (and I) are enjoying our M50i w/DHP, but I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the specialness of our 2018 X5M beast. You need to own a genuine ///M series to understand it. Look at the skid pad differences in the article. The F95 is going to be that much better too. Regardless, it's the wifey's car (X5M was overkill for her, not me!), and I still have my M3CS to enjoy.

I agree, driving a true M car is a totally different experience than something that is not. Parked side by side, most true M cars look considerably more aggressive than the lower models too, they truly are special.
Everyone has different priorities and budgets, I've an M50i w/DHP on order but if the payment/cost were the same, I'd take the X5M in a heartbeat, as I'm sure a few of the others that say the M50i is "good enough/close enough/fast enough" would. (Same goes for many of those with 40i saying that comparing it to the M50i)

Side question, why have you owned so many M3's!!??

I Would have to disagree here. Let's live in a fantasy world where the X5M and X5 M50i look exactly the same (same exterior and interior) and the pricing was the same.

I may be inclined to take the slightly slower one one due to softer suspension. Day to day in an SUV you would much rather the comfort than the speed.

Having said that, because the X5M's exterior looks better than the X5 M50i. Yes I would take an X5M over an M50i if pricing was the same.

"Everyone has different priorities"

Personally I prefer a firm ride. The last X5M wasn't even close to being harsh, imo it could have been even firmer and still very comfortable as a daily.

I'm going to sound like a broken record if you've seen any of my other posts on this question but the X5's tragic flaw as an SUV may be its small payload capacity (849-871 lbs on the "tire and loading information" sticker on the door jamb across several 40i, 50i and M50i that I've looked at). An 849 lb payload capacity means the X5 can only carry 4 people plus luggage - or, if you're towing something at the 7,200 lbs capacity with a typical 10% tongue weight, then the driver can't weight more than 129 lbs! For context, every one of the X5's competitors has a payload capacity around 1500 lbs. (Range Rover Sport is 1,521 to 1,951 lbs, Q7 is 1,552 to 1,750 lbs, GLE is 1,434 to 1,532 lbs, Explorer is 1,433 to 1,815 lbs, etc.)
Correct. This is why we went with an Armada instead of the X5. I actually wanted to be able to tow my car and haul some stuff instead of just one or the other.

So I am a sucker for deltas, so check out the difference between the 2019 X5 50i and the updated 2020 X5 M50i.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...rive50i-drive/

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...y-the-numbers/

2019 0-60 4.2 (without roll-out I assume?)
2020 0-60 3.9 (3.7 with rollout)

2019 1/4 12.7@109
2020 1/4 12.4 @ 112

similar difference between the N63TU2 and N63TU3 750i.

Safe to say the new engine improves the trap speed by about 3 mph and drops the e.t. by about .3 to .4 sec.

Insane number for an SUV. Almost pulled the trigger on one before I bought a F90. Didn't want a full M car since I don't track it but I also wanted just a big body sedan.

Here's my take on all this FWIW. Regarding the low payload capacity if BMW tuned the vehicle for more payload it would not handle like it does. There's always a trade-off on suspension settings and springs.

Regarding people not wanting or needing a true M SUV most just want the the extra space. Or perhaps they just like sitting up high and mighty and like the look and popularity of an SUV. Even tho they may never track it, fortunately for us driving enthusiast there are still many amazing low traffic roads in the U.S. that you can unleash a true M vehicle. Or perhaps you live in Germany and want an autobahn missile. With that said, The M50i seems to a good compromise and checks all boxes reasonably well.

Iv only tracked my CS a few times and will never be able to drive it to its limit. But it's cool and looks amazing. Knowing what it's capable of makes me feel good. Look how many people buy supercars and not only never track them but don't even drive them aggressively. Hell, some only take them to cars and coffee events and stare at them in their garage. I think many people buy these types of cars for the emotional ownership experience. I see soccer moms driving super duty pick ups. :

The payload capacity may be a bit better than rated - I weighed my 2019 50i M Sport before closing the deal and found it has 1,220 pounds of capacity (based on GVWR minus curb weight) versus the official rating of 871 pounds. That was enough for me to be able to tow a trailer with a 600 pound tongue weight and transport me and my wife and our dogs.

So do the X6 X4 fix the upright seating situation?

I was a bit surprised at the M5 position vs the M6 and instantly wished I had realized what bmw meant by 'coupe' when they made the 4 door grand coupe. Seating position makes a big difference.

If the X4 leans more planted i would grab that over the X3

This really makes me miss my 2017 X5M. That was really the perfect SUV. These shots show how much they ruined the front end of the new X5's. RIP. I'm currently in an M5 and waiting on the new X5M. I know it will perform well, just won't look as good. Shame.

Folks I apologize if this is an uninformed question but is the M50i an N series engine and the X5M an S series engine? The only reason I ask is because there were/are reliability issues on the N series engine on the F15. Just wondering if there is the potential for something similar happening in the new generation.
