The X5 M50i is an N series engine - however both the 50i and M50i have a third generation design versus the original N63.

The M50i has a N63B44M3. The 50i has a N63B44N3. There are hardware differences. The M50i is more built.

An 849 lb payload capacity means the X5 can only carry 4 people plus luggage - or, if you're towing something at the 7,200 lbs capacity with a typical 10% tongue weight, then the driver can't weight more than 129 lbs! For context, every one of the X5's competitors has a payload capacity around 1500 lbs. (Range Rover Sport is 1,521 to 1,951 lbs, Q7 is 1,552 to 1,750 lbs, GLE is 1,434 to 1,532 lbs, Explorer is 1,433 to 1,815 lbs, etc.)
I think if you get the air suspension the payload capacity goes up quite a bit for the G05...

I still own my e70 M and purchased the 2020 M50i because it is an amazing package and the performance is unreal for such a vehicle. I agree with previous posters that it is a very emotional decision and the M cars are truly special, including their aggressive stance and looks. It's great that we can still have a choice, everything becoming mass market nowadays.

Since this post is about the M50i I can absolutely confirm and agree with the article. This is the best of both worlds and a full M car or truck will always be special for a smaller audience....and more pricey including running cost (regardless of the model, ask me how I know ).

So hereís my $0.02....

My wife just picked up her X5 M50i back around Halloween. The thing is an ABSOLUTE HOOT to drive, and thatís coming from someone whoís daily driver is an M5C. Sure the M5 is faster and tighter, but the X5 M50i is very quick, comfortable and just a joy to be behind the wheel of.

She came out of a Lexus RX350 which was a steaming pile of dog poo.

Now, I actually donít mind swapping cars with her every now and then! If we are going anywhere over an hour away, itís always the X5 M50i that gets the nod.

BMW has a real winner on their hands here, so much so, that I cannot imagine being compelled to spring for the full X5M. Of course, YMMV, and thereís something for everyone!

That's quite the upgrade.

We also came out of an RX350, but went for the 40i and even that is miles ahead of the RX.

Thanks for bringing this up. The steering on the 40i at speeds below 50mph is straight trash in my opinion. You have no idea where that huge car is on the road. The difference is astounding when you drive an E70 M sport immediately afterward. Feels like it was made by an entirely different company.

I haven't driven the G05 50i.

I ended up buying a 2019 50i M Sport and I think its steering feels almost the same as the M50i. The heavier engine in the front really seems to make a difference vs. the 40i.

I test drove the 40i and was very impressed with its handling and power. I ended up ordering the M50i for no other reason than I could.
