The W13 is new for both, they are backed by highly qualified staff and lots of ressources ("More than 950 employees work 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Brackley site.") and they get equal opportunities to fine-tune settings to match their personal preferences (each driver has its own style).
Kind of, but it depends on ones liking of setup. Like I said before Lewis is used to merc cars being perfection, so maybe he kept trying to fine tune things over and over in search of perfection. But as a result he ran out of time to change setups and never got to a base that he liked and could continue to refine. So essentially he tried every option, never picked one and fine tuned it and ran out of time so he is running with an absolute crap setup.

Whereas with George he is more used to cars driving like crap, so he might just find a good enough set up and deal with it and pushes through and deals with adversity. Or maybe George just like how the car was setup and it suited his style of driving, so he didn't need to keep looking.

In the end I guess it depends on how much you want to keep refining your setup. Maybe Lewis was trying to maximize everything he possibly could so he could try to catch the front runners as best as possible but as a result got caught out. Maybe George found his ideal setup instantly I cannot tell you for sure.

Epescially if you have to try and dial out porposing before even before setting up balance, so you really don't have much time to get the car where you like it.

Whereas I think with George he is used to driving absolute piles of crap, that nothing bothers him. He just learned to deal with it.
What is interesting Ferrari is still experiencing porpoising. From the onboards, it seems quite bad at times. But their lap time is still their.

I don't think it is just porpoising holding the Merc back.

Hamilton, Albon, and Ricciardo all starting next to each other. Should be interesting.

Yeah I've seen the Ferrari porpoise too, however ferrari is able to keep the porpoising at a relatively controlled level where it only does it at extremely high speeds and it is not always violent - it can be but not always. The important thing to note is that they're able to keep ride height at the optimal point, so they don't lose any load.

With merc porposing seems to happen at high speed and medium speeds, and it is always extremely violent, and the only way to relieve it (not even fully eliminate it) is to raise ride height which costs merc alot of down force. So right off the bat merc's porpoising issue is alot worse than ferrari, and the decreased down force drastically decreases cornering speed and merc is loosing alot of time there. To counter this merc run alot larger wings which adds to the overall drag and decreases top speed.

I am not convinced the merc's engine is totally behind as of yet, because I saw some data on instagram showing trap speeds were almost identical ~1-3 km/h off from the merc vs. redbull and ferrari. But I am waiting for confirmation through official trap speed charts.

Peter windsor talking about top speeds:

If you look at FP1 on light fuel for instance:

1) redbull had the highest speed with perez at 333kph max was 329 kph
2) leclerc was 323 kph so 11 kph down on perez, sainz was 321 kph
3) lewis was 322 kph so 1 down on the fastest ferrari
4) merc's fastest top speed so far was the same as last year, redbull's top speed so far was 15 kph faster than last year.

So what do I make of this? Ferrari doesn't have the fastest out right car its redbull so this ferrari being all jet mode is nonsense - in terms of top speed, acceleration maybe slightly faster due to the shorter gears. Mercedes doesn't look like they're in huge trouble yet - I still think it is all chasssis not engine.

and by the logic of last year saying mercedes was unraceable due to their immense top speed, which was not true as they didn't top every speed trap sheet, redbull should be unbeatable this year, so there shouldn't be any excuses for them not winning every race by the logic used last year.

RBR at 333kph! Well guys, fantastic comments, there is still more to be learnt..what are the odds now on the betting for who will win the DC? or will they change after Jedda. I guess they have changed since the start in Bahrain and they'll keep changing.
