PA 5 is winning pretty much every comparison test that I have seen in the last couple of years and it is the most well rounded winter tire you can buy in my opinion. If you are willing to give up some dry weather performance of the PA 5s, then Nokian Hakka R3 has the best ice/snow performance of any studless winter tire.

Tire rack - always the best...

275/45R20 Vredestein Wintrac Pro - Non run flats...I looked hard at this 'new to the US' brand - and came away impressed (Gruss Gott had them in WI, drove them 9 months in Newport Beach when he moved there!). Typically, I've always had Blizzaks on my car(s) (S4 and 540)....with no issues.

It depends on what your ultimate goal is:
- get through deep snow and ice, regardless to get home or your ultimate destination
- okay snow and ice, but better on dry, cold roadways

Winter tires come in lots of flavors. The Nokian R3's are better at snow and ice. The Michelin PA5's probably on dry, cold roads. We're talking sometimes subtle differences, but real and measurable. The Nokian's have an aramid sidewall that may save you if you hit a hidden pothole, and have a warranty against that type of damage. I've had R3's now on two vehicles, and of all the winter tires I've had over the years, the R3's have had the least impact on mileage of any winter tire I've owned since the 1970's...the science on rolling resistance is getting lots better today. The only Pilot Alpins I've had were an older series...I'd hope the new ones are better.

The quitest winter tire with the best ride and very good overall performance is the Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance G1 SCT.

The SCT designation is important for the quite ride, it denotes Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology, i.e. the dampening foam tech. Makes a true difference, i tried tires with and without.
