Only reason I’m trying to figure this out is there’s months sometimes six months at a time I don’t drive this car and I want to be able to charge the battery up to avoid battery failure . Any thoughts if it never moves off of level 3 what the problem maybe bad charger from bmw or maybe the battery topped off enough that it does not sense the need to try to charge I’ve been using battery chargers for years and have never run into this challenge. Mind you charging systems and cars have changed also chargers have changed. Comments appreciated.

In any event, I bought the CTEK and have been successfully using it for the past couple of years and my car, like yours, sometimes sits for months without starting it. Once/month I connect the CTEK and let 'er rip to #7, then disconnect it. I just pulled a Car Data report and it says my battery's health status is 200, its the original 2021 battery. |

"The first “cold” start is always handled by the traditional 12-volt pinion starter motor. But if the engine is above 60 degrees Celsius (140° F), the 48-volt system will handling starting the car. This allows for less emissions, a 20% quicker start, and less disruptive vibrations and sounds for the vehicle’s occupants."

[QUOTE=Marty in NY;30934642]Ok, I misunderstood you to have them both in your possession now. I recall when I used the CTEK to charge two deep cycle marine batteries, it stayed on 3 for a day and a half, well could have been two days but after that it progressed up the ladder to 7. I suppose each brand has its own way to measure and condition the battery so maybe just give it more time. Mine works great on my X5.
That’s actually what I’m going to do. Is connect it back up and let it go at least 3 to 4 days . Then I’ll report back with discovery do you think if it comes on the iDrive about the battery warning, ⚠️ start car When that happens, Would that stop the charging process. And leaving the hood, a jarred and unlocked. |

So after 48 hours upon checking the car the charger has went from level 3 to turning it self off . . In the manual, it says after 50 hours if nothing changes you could have a bad battery.

Did you pull a Car Data report? That might also tell you if your battery is getting close to needing replaced or needs replaced now. |

Request it in MyGarage. Click on Vehicle Profile and there will be an option for CarData.

I think Turtleboy already answered this. I can’t say definitely that’s how it works but it’s my understanding if you park your car at wallyworld and step in and out of wallyworld and your ICE is 140 or above, it starts engine using the 48v like it does with ASS.

When you get the email stating your report is available, you click the link in it and you will have to download the report to your puter, it should end up in your download folder or where ever you set your downloaded files to go. Then double click the file, I think its a zip file, then you will see a few diff looking files, one is a pdf that explains how to read the report, you can save that to your puter for reference.
The actual report will be an html link, so you will once again need to download it once you see it or just view it online but.. .. BMW will not keep it on line for long so its best to download it so you always have it to compare the next one to. It's not an intuitive process the first couple of times you do it but if you do it monthly, it becomes easier. I'm going on memory here so what you see may differ a very slight bit. Look at my post #63 to see the battery sections of the explanatory pdf. |

The CTEKs are not chargers. They are maintainers. They may bring a battery back to full charge but they are designed to maintain a battery not charge one that is severely depleted. If your battery is so weak it won't engage the starter it would be best to put the battery in a charger.
