Actually, that's not totally it. PATCO used that excuse to help get funding for the second career program, which was never funded. I was still having fun and could still stuff a 6-mile hole or get 4 side-by-side for the 4 parallel runways when I got fired.

There are some that start losing their "courage" and give extra room when the extra 1/2 mile isn't available.
