Hi Gang,

Finalizing our order for our new M50i, and I can't seem to find any information on ride height difference between the two options.

More specifically, ground clearance.

Would an X5 w/ DHP have the same ride height/ground clearance as an X5 withe the two-axle air suspension set to "Sport" (which I assume is the mode I would be using 99% of the time)?

I understand the sir suspension is adjustable within a specific height range (Comfort, Sport, Loading, etc.), and this information is easy to find, but what is the "Static" height of the DHP, as it isn't height adjustable???

Does anyone know where I can get this information?

I'm equally interested in both options, however I would defer to the air suspension if it sits lower to the ground in "Sport", as I would prefer the aesthetics of a lower-riding SUV, as opposed to one that corners flatter.

DHP doesn't lower the car. don't get the air suspension if you care about handling. DHP is the only way to go if you want the car to feel proper imo

a less than 1in decrease in height isn't a huge deal but not having an active away bar is. There's more to active away bars than cornering flat, they improve comfort over rough surfaces and make the car feel more confident. Drive both and you'll see what I mean

I appreciate your reply, and I understand that dhp cannot adjust ride height (as stated in my post).

I completely and thoroughly understand the differences between the two suspension options.

However....I'm specifically looking for the ride height (ground clearance) differentiation between an X5 w/ the static DHP suspension vs. an X5 with the two-axle air suspension (lowered to "Sport").

This is the question that no one seems to be able to definitively answer.

I believe in in sport the DHP does lower a bit but not sure if it is as much as the air. The ground clearance numbers I can find all show the same in comfort mode and up to .8" with air. I can only assume from what I read in the past the DHP you might get close to .5" in sport mode only.

I don't know the exact numbers, but I have seen a DHP car side by side with an air suspension car set to the lowest setting. The air suspension car was substantially lower.

I think the Air Suspension in Sport is 0.4" lower than the DHP.

The BMW X5 M50i is equipped with the Adaptive M Suspension while the BMW X7 M50i is equipped with a two-axle air suspension system (optional on the X5 M50i) which allows for a 0.8 inch lowering of ride height when in Sport mode or when speeds exceed 85 mph. I guess the starting point for AS is 8.7 like for 40i and X7 with AS. With DHP it's always 8.3".

The lowest setting is for parking only to make it easier to get in and out of and load. When you start moving the car will raise off the lowest setting.

I guess that makes sense then.

Assuming the static DHP is 8.3, then the air suspension (starting at 8.7) lowered by .8 inches in "Sport", would mean the air suspension rides slightly lower than the DHP equipped X5 (.4 lower for the AS, as you said).

Also when you stop it does not lower automatically. You have to use the toggle switch to lower and it is SLOW...

everything on x7 is slow

- - windows lowering - slow
- air suspension lowering or rising - super slow
- 3d row access needs to move 2nd and front passenger seats - deathly slow.

Someone from my family decided not to get it based on the slowness

Someone needs to make a commercial -

"it is pouring rain - x7 pulls into a luxury front door in NYC house or school.

Attendant runs out to open the door after seeing a nice car.
He runs up and is waiting in the rain getting soaked for the
- windows to slowly open (dramatization with music and such)
- suspension to slowly lower the car
- slow - royalty type person mumbles at the attendant to wait so the 3d row children can come out
- front door opens - pregnant wife comes out in the soaking rain
- second row door opens - all the passengers spill out from the second row
- they all stand in pouring rain waiting for the sequence of seats to stop folding

Kids finally come out and run into the house.
Sequence repeats itself to get the car back together- which takes another 5 minutes

X7 M50 peels off into the rain to get stuck in NY traffic

The M50i DHP Pro Suspension comes with a lowered ride height. Probably around the same height as the AS sport setting

M50i is -10mm lower than the standard ground clearance or the same height as the 2-axle air suspension "Dynamic" height which is not selectable.

Dynamic Level -10mm = 0.394 inches
Sport Level -20mm = 0.787 inches

Dynamic Level
When driving without a preset program, the vehicle level is adapted automatically, depending on the speed. This reduces drag and increases the driving dynamics of the G05.

If a driving speed of roughly 140 km/h (87 mph) is exceeded, the "Dynamic level" (–10 mm) is set. Dynamic level cannot be approached manually and the driver is not notified about this ride height.

I agree on the windows being slow. The AS is the same as any I have used though in a car.
