Air filter and spark plugs

Took the X6M Competition to the dealership for a oil change. The service advisor suggested getting a new air filter for $497.00 and spark plugs for $1,100. Wow!

It’s a 2020 with 27,000 miles on it. Second owner. Do these prices seem accurate? Seem kind of high to me.

OEM air filter for V8 is like $40, you need 2 of them, 1 left and 1 right. They are mirror of each other, different part number. 15 min job DIY, if not 10. It is a very DIYable job. Difficulty level from 1-10, where 1 being the easiest. This is a 1 job. 30k is a good time for air filter consider how inexpensive it is.

OEM spark plug is $20 each. You need 8. I would say 1-2 hour job at most. The inner plugs take a bit of time to get to, but it is actually easier than online 6.

Are you the original owner?
If so, I imagine your car is out of the included maintenance warranty, which is for 36 months. My 2021 X5MC with less than 11,000 miles on it went in for its 36 month service last month. Along with the oil & filter change, it also included the air filters and spark plugs.
The spark plugs and air filters should have been changed by now at the 36 month service on your car, regardless of mileage. If so, then I really doubt your car would require spark plugs and air filters so soon.
Look into it further.

Maintenance plan isn't transferable. It started to be after 2021 If I remember correctly. I would suggest time to start looking at indy shop that you can trust.

Not sure if it applies everywhere - in Canada they only replace the plugs “when the car tells them”. I had a plug foul and had to park my car for the weekend until I could drop in for service. I pointed out how silly it was that they weren’t doing preventative maintenance.

Yes, still under the factory warranty until March 2024. I can’t believe the dealership wanted almost $500 for air filter and almost $1,100 for new spark plugs and install………Crazy. I guess that’s Scottsdale, AZ for ya. No thanks I’ll change the air filters for about $47 bucks each and get new spark plugs myself and have someone else install them.

Anyone have confirmation on when/if the included maintenance changed from original owner to vehicle regardless of owner?

Btw, just had my 22’ X5MC with 15k miles in for an oil change and they indicated it was time for plugs, engine and cabin air filters. No charge.

Dealerships are flat out trying to scam owners with those outrageous prices.

Filters takes 20mins tops to DIY.

I've done spark plugs on my X5M and could have them done in an hour. 1.5 if I was taking my time. No special tools needed and the process is no different compared to any other car.

It would make the most sense to do both the air filter and plugs at the same time since you have to remove the intake anyway.

The only semi unique tool may be needed for spark plugs is that long thin wall socket. You can easily buy them, just better to prepare instead of taking things off then realize a trip to hardware store is needed.

But yes, cannot be more theb 2 hr for DIY. I would say 1-10, where 1 is air filter, spark plug maybe 3?

Ok, so you are the original owner. Then you should have received a notification from the MyBMW app which stated car was due for oil & filter, brake fluid change, spark plugs and the air filters when your car was coming up on its 36 month service. So what happened?
